Notes

  1. This herb warms the Middle Jiao and the Qi of the Kidneys and Bladder, descends Qi, and treats turbid urination.
  2. It is excellent at stopping pain and dispersing Cold.
  3. It is reported to treat Cold bulging disorders, digest Food Stagnation and expel Wind from the skin.
  4. Bi Cheng Qie and Fr. Piperis Longi Bi Ba both disperse Cold and warm the Middle, treating Deficiency Cold of the Middle Jiao. Bi Cheng Qie is warm and quite acrid, and disperses more powerfully to warm the Stomach and Spleen and eliminate Qi Stagnation. Its strengths are dispersing Cold, alleviating pain and descending Qi. It is best suited to Qi Stagnation producing pain in the chest, epigastrium and abdomen, or to nausea, vomiting and hiccup from Stomach Cold. Bi Ba is very Hot and strongly disperses Cold that has sunk deep into the Middle Jiao; it is best suited to Deficiency Cold of the Stomach and Intestines with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
  5. Rx. et Rz. Litseae Dou Chi Jiang is warm, aromatic and acrid. Entering the Lung and Liver channels, it expels Wind, eliminates Dampness, regulates the flow of Qi and stops pain. Although it is used for Stomach ache and Wind-Damp Bi, its most common use is for lower back pain. It is also given for dysmenorrhea with a painful, distended lower abdomen that is relieved by pressure or Heat, and for headache, chills and muscle aches from an External disorder. The dosage is 1.5-6g.
