Notes
- Its strong cough- and dyspnea-relieving action makes it suitable for cough and dyspnea with little or no Phlegm, and it is often chosen when other herbs have not worked well. It is appropriate for cold cough and dyspnea. It may be used alone as a powder, the dried flower may be sliced and rolled for smoking, or it may be combined with other herbs.
- It relieves pain effectively in most areas of the body and can be used alone for many kinds of pain, such as chest and abdominal pain, Wind-Damp arthralgia and pain from traumatic injury. In large doses it acts as an anesthetic, which is why it served as a narcotic in ancient times.
- Through its spasm-stopping action, it is indicated for epilepsy and chronic infantile convulsions. For this it is combined with herbs that extinguish Wind, stop spasms and resolve Phlegm, such as Quan Xie, Tian Ma and Zhi Tian Nan Xing, among others.
