Notes
- The charred form is the one normally used.
- Its main application is bloody Phlegm.
- Uterine bleeding or heavy menstrual bleeding can be treated with it alone.
- Zong Liu Pi and Nodus Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Ou Jie both astringe bleeding. Ou Jie is sweet and astringent; it stops bleeding while also reducing Blood Stasis, and in its fresh form it cools Blood Heat. Zong Lu Pi is bitter and astringent and binds and restrains more strongly than Ou Jie. It is used chiefly for bleeding that does not involve Blood Stasis. Because it also dries Dampness, it is suitable for vaginal discharge.
- Traditionally, Aged Trachycarpus Chen Zong Pi is the only fiber used medicinally; the older and more worn it is, the better it works.
- Charred Trachycarpus Chen Zong (Zong Lu Tan, Zong Pi Tan) enters the Blood and stops every type of bleeding, and may be used for epistaxis, hematemesis, Intestinal Wind and continuous uterine bleeding provided there is no Internal Heat. It is the form used most often. It suits heavy bleeding best, as long as any Stasis and obstruction have already been fully cleared.
- Fructus Trachycarpi Zong Lu Zi is the fruit of the same plant and shares similar functions and indications. Zong Lu Zi works better for hypertension, insomnia or excessive dreaming. Its dosage is 6-30g.
