Notes
- The action of this herb resembles that of corticosteroids.
- It benefits marrow and tonifies Jing.
- It calms and soothes the five Zang.
- It enhances mental power.
- It is used specifically for problems of the skeleton.
- It is thought to have a minor Blood-augmenting action.
- It belongs to the Kidney channel, the Blood level and the Chong Channel.
- Its moist nature makes it an important herb for tonifying the Kidneys.
- Ba Ji Tian, Hb. Epimedii Yin Yang Huo and Rz. Curculiginis Xian Mao all reinforce Kidney Yang, strengthen the sinews and bones and expel Wind-Dampness. Xian Mao is the hottest and most acrid of the three and expels Cold-Dampness strongly, but because it is slightly toxic it is suitable only for short-term use. Ba Ji Tian is acrid, sweet and only mildly warming, with a soft, moistening quality that tonifies Yang without being too drying or cloying. It also augments Jing. Yin Yang Huo is warmer and more noticeably strengthens Ming Men Fire, while also strongly dispersing Wind-Dampness and unblocking Bi.
- Salt-prepared Morinda Yan Ba Ji enters the Kidney channel more readily, augments primal Yang and replenishes Yin water. It is suitable for impotence or spermatorrhea caused by Kidney Jing Deficiency.
- Processed Morinda Zhi Ba Ji is milder in nature, so it tonifies Fire without excessively drying Yin.
From Class
- Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang + Ba Ji Tian for hypothyroidism: Hypothyroid = diminished qi-yang vector across the three burners; Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang raises it, adding Ba Ji Tian for libido and bone health. (Rabinowitz)
