Notes

  1. On its own, it is used for dysmenorrhea and postpartum pain.
  2. Its chief use is for abscesses and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract (generally in combination with Sm. Coicis Yi Yi Ren).
  3. The seeds are employed in treating eye diseases.
  4. It also relieves abdominal pain in women caused by Blood Stasis.
  5. In gynecology, it is widely used for Blood Stasis with toxic accumulation.
  6. It dispels inflammation, drains pus, purifies the Blood and treats edema and swollen lesions.
  7. It suppresses the growth of cancer cells.
  8. Its uses include carbuncle, general edema, diseases caused by pathogenic Heat, paralysis from pathogenic Wind and pain following paralysis.
  9. According to one source, this herb is effective for stubborn illnesses caused by pathogenic Wind and clears chronic Blood Stasis.
  10. Another source states that it is effective for diseases of the Blood and Qi, and for cardiac and abdominal lumps.
  11. For abdominal pain and fullness, grind 50g of this herb together with 100g of Sm. Coicis Yi Yi Ren and 20g of Rx. Aconiti Lateralis Preparata Zhi Fu Zi into a powder; for each oral dose, decoct 3-5g in 80ml of water, boiling it down to 40ml.
  12. Bai Jiang Cao and Hb. Taraxaci Pu Gong Ying both cool Heat, resolve toxicity and reduce swollen abscesses. Pu Gong Ying is better at dredging constraint and dispersing clumping (focusing on the Liver and Stomach channels), whereas Bai Jiang Cao is better at eliminating Stasis and expelling pus.
  13. Bai Jiang Cao and Hb. Houttuyniae Yu Xing Cao both clear Heat, resolve toxicity, reduce sores and expel pus. Bai Jiang Cao is bitter, acrid and slightly cold, enters the Qi and Blood levels and is excellent at clearing Heat from the Stomach and Intestines. It treats abscesses of the Lungs, Liver and Intestines and expels Blood Stagnation to relieve pain. It is used for pelvic Blood Stagnation and toxic accumulation, such as may occur with postpartum lochia. Yu Xing Cao is acrid and cold and mainly enters the Lung channel. It is best for cooling Lung Heat, eliminating toxicity that manifests as Lung abscess and expelling pus. It also promotes urination and unblocks painful urinary dysfunction.
  14. Studies have found its sedative activity to be twice as strong as that of its Western relative, Valerian root.
