Notes

  1. Its sweet taste gives it a Qi-tonifying quality: it tonifies Qi, nourishes the body and addresses steaming bones.
  2. It tends to tonify Heart Qi, disperse Dampness and clear Heat, thereby stopping sweating.
  3. It is reputed to treat skin verrucosis, nevus and decayed muscles.
  4. It is reputed to suppress the growth of cancer cells and to kill them.
  5. It is further said to clear extreme Heat, cure pestilence, jaundice and drunkenness, and calm the Small Intestine.
  6. According to reports, 15g of this herb can prevent colorectal cancer.
  7. Fu Xiao Mai and Rx. Ephedrae Ma Huang Gen both stop sweating and are frequently combined for spontaneous sweating and night sweats. Fu Xiao Mai stops sweating by augmenting Qi and clearing Heat, whereas Ma Huang Gen works by astringing and cannot tonify Qi, cool the Heart or clear Heat.
  8. Wheat (Fr. Tritici) Xiao Mai consists of the ripe grains that sink rather than float. Sweet and slightly cold, it enters the Heart channel, nourishes Heart Qi and eliminates irritability, so it treats irritability, restlessness and insomnia as seen in restless organ disorder; for this it is combined with Rx. Glycyrrhizae Gan Cao and Fr. Jujube Da Zao.
  9. Calming the Spirit is attributed to Xiao Mai (ripe wheat), while Fu Xiao Mai inhibits sweating (Secondary source)
