Notes

  1. Certain sources place it among the "Blood Invigorating" herbs.
  2. Its action is weaker than that of Rx. NotoginsengSan Qi .
  3. Its main uses are hematemesis or hemoptysis from Blood Stasis, and postpartum bleeding.
  4. It stanches bleeding from metal wounds and expels a dead fetus and the afterbirth, though it seriously damages Yin and Blood.
  5. Hua Rui Shi, Rx. Notoginseng San Qi, Crinis Carbonisatus Xue Yu Tan, Pollen Typhae Pu Huang and Rx. Rubiae Qian Cao all stop bleeding while removing Stasis. They are commonly combined for any bleeding caused by Stasis, or whenever bleeding must be stopped without leaving residual Stasis behind. Hua Rui Shi removes Stasis and stops bleeding by gathering and transforming the Blood. San Qi ranks among the strongest of the group; it also relieves pain, reduces swelling and excels at treating trauma. Xue Yu Tan generates flesh and helps wounds and ulcers close. Pu Huang promotes urination. Qian Cao cools the Blood and regulates menstruation, and is used when Heat in the Blood dries it, producing bleeding and Stasis.
  6. Calcined Ophicalcitum Duan Hua Rui Shi powders more readily, is less sour and astringent, and is less likely to upset digestion. It is the preferred form for internal use and can also be applied externally.
  7. Vinegar-calcined Ophicalcitum Cu Duan Hua Rui Shi has a stronger astringent action for stopping bleeding.
  8. Sulfur-calcined Liu Huang Duan Hua Rui Shi is used mostly as a topical treatment for sores and for bleeding from trauma.
