Notes
- It is particularly helpful for bleeding hemorrhoids and bloody dysentery.
- For Liver Heat, it may be drunk daily as a tea.
- More recently it has been applied to high blood pressure and to a stifling feeling in the chest with irritability.
- Huai Mi and Rx. Sanguisorbae Di Yu are both key herbs for Intestinal bleeding and dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Huai Mi cools the Liver and descends Fire, whereas Di Yu reduces swelling, relieves pain, and helps sores close and heal.
- The flower buds, Sophora Flower Buds Huai Mi, are fuller in flavor and properties than the opened buds or flowers Huai Hua.
- Dry-fried Sophora Flowers and Buds Chao Huai Hua Mi are less bitter and cold, yet they go straight to the Blood and stop bleeding more readily. They suit bleeding disorders in people with Spleen and Stomach Deficiencies. Chewing Huai Mi throughout the day can ease loss of voice and a constricted throat.
- Charred Sophora Flowers Huai Hua Tan have a weaker blood-clotting action, yet their capacity to stop bleeding is increased, so they can be used for bleeding disorders of every kind.
- The properties of Sophora Flowers Huai Hua are much the same.
- Fr. Sophorae Huai Jiao is bitter and cold and enters the Liver and Large Intestine. Compared with Huai Hua, it stops bleeding less effectively but sedates Heat more strongly, and it also lubricates the Intestines. Indications include hemorrhoidal bleeding, hematochezia, and bleeding from abscesses or from swelling and pain. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and in Spleen and Stomach Deficiency Cold. Dosage is 10-15g.
