Notes
- Applied externally, it helps blacken the hair and stops bleeding.
- It has lately been used for Damp-related disorders of the perineum, such as perineal and vaginal itching, usually as an external wash.
- Research has shown that it inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
- Violent hematemesis is reportedly cured by a decoction of this herb with young boy's urine, pounded ink stick and Nodus Nelumbinis Rhizomatis Ou Jie.
- For hematochezia, calcine the herb, pound it to powder and take 6g per dose.
- For migraine and other headaches, drip the juice of the herb into the nose.
- Mo Han Lian and Fr. Ligustri Lucidi Nu Zhen Zi both enrich Kidney Yin and augment the Liver. Mo Han Lian is a strong Yin tonic that blackens the hair and cools the blood to stop bleeding. Nu Zhen Zi tonifies less, but it cools Heat from Yin Deficiency and brightens the eyes.
- Charred Eclipta Han Lian Tan stops bleeding more effectively but is weaker at tonifying Yin and cooling.
- It is regarded as the principal Yin tonic that lacks an oily quality.
- It is known for slowing the signs of aging.
- Taken internally, its juice treats diphtheria and dysentery; applied topically to the nasal cavity, it treats headaches.
- The fresh herb clears Heat and cools the Blood more strongly than the dried herb.
- Hb. Hypericum Ascyron Hong Han Lian is occasionally substituted for Mo Han Lian. It is stronger for cooling the Blood, invigorating the Blood and healing sores and ulcers, while Mo Han Lian stops bleeding and tonifies Kidney Yin more effectively.
