Notes

  1. When Qi is deficient in the lower aspects of the body, this herb carries Qi downward to the lower part of the body.
  2. Its uses include asthma and cough caused by Wind, Heat, Dryness and Fire.
  3. The herb is a common ingredient in cough syrups.
  4. In decoctions it is paired with Yin tonics, Phlegm-resolving herbs and herbs that clear Lung Heat.
  5. Pi Pa Ye and Rz. Cynanchi Stauntonii Bai Qian both excel at descending rebellious Lung Qi. Pi Pa Ye is cooling and moistening, best for dry cough or Phlegm that is hard to expectorate, and it also stops nausea. Bai Qian is warming and parching, best for External Pathogenic Qi obstructing the Lungs, causing a feeling of fullness in the chest and a rattle of Phlegm in the throat.
  6. Pi Pa Ye and Rz. Pinelliae Preparata Zhi Ban Xia both treat Lung and Stomach conditions. Pi Pa Ye cools the Lungs to stop cough and transform Phlegm; being cool and moistening, it is used for Phlegm-Heat and cough from Lung Dryness. By cooling Stomach Heat, it keeps Stomach Qi from being carried upward by Excess Yang, and it lets Zhi Ban Xia move Phlegm more easily. Zhi Ban Xia transforms Dampness and Phlegm and works better for cough with profuse Phlegm from Phlegm-Dampness. By transforming Phlegm and Dampness, it frees Stomach Qi to descend properly and so prevents nausea. It is warm and parching, acting mainly to parch Dampness and transform Phlegm. Combined, the pair represents Moistness and Dryness, Cold and Heat, and their ability to descend Qi is greatly strengthened. They are often used together for cough and wheezing, to relieve nausea and to calm the Stomach.
  7. Raw Loquat Leaf Sheng Pi Pa Ye or Fresh Loquat Leaf Xian Pi Pa Ye is more cooling and best for cooling Lung and Stomach Heat while transforming Phlegm and descending rebellious Qi. It is the best choice for nausea from Stomach Heat. It also resolves toxicity and soothes the throat.
  8. Honey-prepared Loquat Leaf Mi Zhi Pi Pa Ye moistens the Lungs more strongly and is best for Lung Heat Injuring the Fluids or for cough from Lung Dryness with rebellious Qi.
  9. Ginger-prepared Loquat Leaf Jiang Zhi Pi Pa Ye is warm rather than cool and better at relieving nausea, making it best for Cold-type cough or nausea from Stomach Cold.
