Notes

  1. Its strength is less than that of Secretio Moschus She Xiang.
  2. It works particularly well for Wind-Stroke with collapse caused by Phlegm.
  3. Su He Xiang and Moschus She Xiang are both acrid, warm and aromatic, and both open the Orifices and awaken the Spirit. She Xiang is the more powerful of the two at opening the Orifices, awakening the Spirit and unblocking the channels and collaterals, so it is used for Qi and Blood Stagnation with swelling and pain. Su He Xiang has a stronger action in clearing away filth and expelling Phlegm, so it treats turbid, filthy Qi and Wind-Stroke in which overabundant Phlegm causes loss of consciousness.
  4. Su He Xiang and Benzoinum An Xi Xiang both open the orifices and treat loss of consciousness. An Xi Xiang has roughly the same strength as Su He Xiang and is less warm, yet it invigorates Blood, so it is used for chest and abdominal pain and postpartum coma. Su He Xiang clears away filth and transforms Phlegm for Wind-Stroke and collapse caused by Phlegm.
  5. Its fragrance penetrates so strongly that the genuine article, when rubbed on the palm, can then be detected on the back of the hand.
  6. Topically, it may be applied to sores, wounds, cracked skin and skin irritation.
