Notes
- A decoction of Rz. et Rx. Rhei Da Huang, Rz. Coptidis Huang Lian, and Rx. Scutellariae Huang Qin can help relieve toxic reactions.
- For cold Kidneys, this is the principal herb.
- It is considered an aphrodisiac.
- Taken on its own, it can address urinary incontinence and frequent urination.
- It is indicated for Cold Qi in the epigastrium and abdomen with an inability to eat, cramps and spasms of the lower back and knees caused by Wind-Cold, Damp-consumption in men, and incontinence in the elderly.
- In males, it strengthens the sexual organ and supports sexual function.
- It is reputed to tonify the San Jiao.
- Xian Mao, Hb. Epimedii Yin Yang Huo, and Rx. Morindae Ba Ji Tian each reinforce Kidney Yang, strengthen sinews and bones and expel Wind-Dampness. Of the three, Xian Mao is the hottest and most acrid and is strong at expelling Cold-Dampness, yet its slight toxicity limits it to short-term use. Ba Ji Tian is acrid, sweet and only mildly warming; its soft, moistening nature tonifies Yang without being excessively drying or cloying, and it also augments Jing. Yin Yang Huo is warmer, more noticeably strengthens Ming Men Fire, and powerfully disperses Wind-Dampness and unblocks Bi.
- Wine-fried Curculigo Jiu Chao Xian Mao is gentler, with a stronger capacity to tonify Kidney Yang and to strengthen sinews and bones.
- Paired with Yin Yang Huo as a Dui-Yao (herb pair) for premature ovarian decline.
