Notes

  1. The root is used to induce abortion and speed a difficult labor.
  2. The leaf is harmful to the fetus.
  3. Its typical use is in febrile disease where Heat is penetrating inward and downward.
  4. Its sweet taste allows it to help tonify weaker patients.
  5. According to some sources, it moistens Dryness and has a purgative action.
  6. It is beneficial for cold sores (herpes).
  7. Rather than acting as a chief herb, it serves as an effective assistant.
  8. Dan Zhu Ye and Fr. Gardeniae Zhi Zi both cool Heat, relieve irritability and promote urination. Zhi Zi is extremely bitter and cold and enters both the Qi and Blood levels; it drains constrained Heat from the San Jiao, cools the Blood and resolves toxicity, while also clearing the Liver and Gallbladder. It is outstanding for eliminating irritable constraint. Dan Zhu Ye is gentler and enters the Qi level only; besides being bitter and cold it is also acrid, so it can vent and disseminate Heat. It mainly treats the Heart and Lungs, and the Stomach to a lesser degree. It is also useful for cough from Wind-Heat and mouth ulcers from Heat in the Heart.
  9. Also known as Zhu Ye.

From Class

  • Dan Zhu Ye (bamboo leaf) — residual/latent heat: Signals chronic recurring infection with residual (latent, fu) heat, distinct from herbs for wind-heat or internal heat; bamboo shoots act as the food catalyst. (Yuen)
