Notes

  1. Being both astringent and able to break up Blood Stagnation, this herb stops bleeding without creating Stagnation.
  2. Its usual application is bleeding from Lung and Stomach Heat.
  3. Because it is fairly mild, it generally serves in a supporting role.
  4. Hematemesis may be treated with the fresh juice
  5. To treat epistaxis, drip the fresh juice into the nostrils.
  6. Ou Jie and Petiolus Trachycarpi Zong Lu Pi both stop bleeding through astringency. Ou Jie is sweet and astringent; it stops bleeding while also reducing Blood Stasis, and in its fresh form it cools Blood Heat. Zong Lu Pi is bitter and astringent, with a stronger binding and restraining action than Ou Jie. Its main use is bleeding without Blood Stasis. Because it also dries Dampness, it is suitable for vaginal discharge.
  7. Fresh Lotus Nodes Xian Ou Jie are cooling, which makes them best for bleeding from Blood Heat. They are often taken alone as fresh juice for epistaxis and hemoptysis.
  8. Charred Lotus Nodes Ou Jie Tan stop bleeding more effectively but are weaker at dispelling Stasis. Being slightly warming, they can be used for bleeding in Yang Deficiency patients.
