Notes

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

A point for the spirit, concerned with its growth and nourishment. It is life's green, life's burden, the color of the Liver: green as the color of Wood, the engenderer of Fire, or as life's color, like green leaves sprouting in springtime. It speaks of revitalization and renewal of the spirit. It also speaks of the Heart's purpose in the world, lending a person the inner luminescence to shine out into life. The name recalls the terrace the Emperor climbed to receive spiritual influences, and the arrival of spring with the blue-green dragon. Even when thunder rolls and terrifies everyone for miles, the ruler stays so composed and reverent that the sacred rite carries on; outer terrors glance off a deep inner seriousness. When the Heart spirit is in balance, things get done as though no one were doing them.

Worsley
  • Worsley groups Blue-Green Spirit with Spirit Path and Spirit Gate as points that belong to the Heart yet reach all the way to the spirit of the person. He also counts it among the Heart points so powerful that he treated it as absolutely forbidden: in his experience most patients would faint if it were needled, creating needless chaos.

Location: On the inner (medial) side of the upper arm, over the brachial artery, 3 ACI above the elbow crease, just behind the medial edge of biceps.
Needle depth: Do not needle
Moxa: 5 cones

When to Consider
  • When the spirit needs growth, nourishment and renewal
  • When joy is deeply lacking, or sorrow of long standing has weighed down the natural radiance of the Heart
  • When a patient needs their sense of potency restored so they can make a new beginning
  • When the Heart spirit is out of sync with life, and the person seems shaky and frightened
Notes
  • Forbidden to needle: needling sends energy rushing at great speed, and 80% of patients faint. Only moxa this point
  • Qing names the natural color of growing plants, and Ling the offerings made to the gods for rain to renew the land; together they point to regeneration of the spirit, fitting for the Heart, home of the Spirit and root of life itself
  • The character qing shows plants growing above an alchemical furnace holding cinnabar: the transforming, generating power of spring growth. Cinnabar, solid and liquid at once, was a Daoist symbol of flexible consciousness and the classic substance for calming the Heart
