  • It is said that in severe diseases, when life is hanging by a thread, 200 to 300 moxa cones on this point will insure the patient's survival.
  • Use this point in any major Spleen disease.
  • To find the intercostal spaces reliably, count downward from the second space, which lies just below the sternal angle; in men the nipple nearly always sits in the fourth space.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Food Drain is a sluice for draining, to transport a stuck Official and help with taking in. It is good for breathing. It reminds us of the Spleen's task of distributing nourishment, and it can get Spleen Qi moving when body, mind and spirit are stagnant. It makes sure the essence of nourishment travels smoothly and evenly to wherever it is needed.

Worsley

Location: On the chest in the 5th intercostal space, 6 ACI from the midline.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 5 cones

When to Consider
  • When the Official is stuck and needs transporting
  • When there is difficulty taking in
  • When the chest feels agitated and congested
  • For obsessions, dwelling on what feeds mind and spirit; it keeps things moving
  • When everything seems to be going down the drain: the person just isn't getting it, the wisdom of experience is lost, and they make the same mistake again and again

From Class

  • Diaphragm stasis: Ren-14 + Ren-4 dispersed, LI-6 bled; or SP-17 + KI-4 bled: For CHF/exertional breathlessness (lung qi failing to move blood); LI is yang of the lungs controlling the diaphragm; broken vessels at KI-4 mean jing-level stasis. (Gioioso)
