  • LI-6 + LU-7: opens the Lung water passages for Yang edema

Contraindications

Notes

  • This point is mostly used to open the Lung water passages.
  • It is known as "the mental tone" point.
  • Large Intestine Luo vessel: Starts at LI-6. Joins its interior-exterior partner, the LU channel, 3 cun above the wrist. Rises up the arm through LI-15 to the jaw and cheek, where it splits: one branch links with the teeth, the other enters the ear to join the Zong mai (the gathering place of the LI, ST, SI, GB and SJ channels at the ear). Symptoms of the Large Intestine Luo: Toothache, deafness, cold sensation in the teeth, and a stifling sensation in the chest and diaphragm.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Side Passage is the Junction point with the Lung, so it brings harmony to the whole Metal element and calms the processes at the beginning and end of a person's life. It is a good point for mental confusion and has a marked mental effect. When Metal is in distress, behavior can swing between extremes, and this point restores balance along with Metal's clarity and judgment. It marks the end of a past period, a passage out of a time: letting go of a hard experience, ending the ruminating and the situation as it has been known, and putting it behind. When things grow stale, freshness is needed. A way around, like a side path: another, less traveled and less cluttered way to release and let go. It brings a new perspective, another angle on things.

Worsley

Location: With the palm side of the forearm laid across the chest: on the posteroradial forearm, 3 ACI from the wrist crease, between abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis longus.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 5-7 cones

When to Consider
  • When there is mental confusion
  • When moods change rapidly and behavior swings between extremes
  • When someone swings between neglect and obsessive cleansing, or between restless searching for meaning and a rigid matter-of-factness
  • When a person is sentimental about the past or represses their feelings
  • When long or intense grief and disappointment have constricted the chest and repressed feelings are blocking an authentic life
  • As a Junction point, when a person is extremely anxious, afraid, insane or suicidal, as if Yin and Yang were being torn apart
  • For generalized anxiety, fears and continual talking
Combinations
  • LU-7 Narrow Defile with LI-6: releases and harmonizes repressed feelings; it can stand in for LU-7 or be paired with it for Lung-related psychological problems
Notes
  • Junction (Luo) point with the Lung

From Class

  • SI-7, SJ-5, SJ-6, ST-40, Ren-15, BL-58, LI-6, GB-37, LV-5, Du-1 (luo complements): Luo complements: SI-7 endocarditis heat; SJ-6 toxic heat; SJ-5 wind-damp bi; BL-58 heart-attack prodrome; LI-6 edema; ST-40/Ren-15 phlegm; GB-37; LV-5, Du-1 rectification. (Gioioso)
  • Diaphragm stasis: Ren-14 + Ren-4 dispersed, LI-6 bled; or SP-17 + KI-4 bled: For CHF/exertional breathlessness (lung qi failing to move blood); LI is yang of the lungs controlling the diaphragm; broken vessels at KI-4 mean jing-level stasis. (Gioioso)
  • Fire luo points (SJ-5, LI-6, SI-7): Any luo point associated with fire clears heat through the blood via the luo mechanism. (Gioioso)
