Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Great Deficiency is bigger than Spirit Deficiency and reaches the Heart Official more deeply and strongly. All the forces pull to aid the Heart; use it when things have been so painful that they start withdrawing from their Heart. It gives a sense of being held, a sense of a bottom, and a basis for the Heart to continue on. When the Heart has no spirit, the patient is lost; this point returns control to the Supreme Controller and sends energy through the whole of body, mind and spirit. It resurrects a spirit that never showed itself, for a patient who remembers always being empty because the spirit of love was absent. It is for a deficiency so great that no rise of spirit can be achieved, and it touches the god within all the Officials, putting the king back in control, calming chaos and relieving panic and fear. It works in a similar way to HT-5 Penetrating Inside.

Worsley
  • Worsley gives it as a First Aid point for sea and travel sickness.
  • Best kept for when the person has started helping themselves.
  • Worsley also named this point for addicts. In an emergency where the Heart itself is failing and the Supreme Controller seems to have gone, he said to go directly here to give strength.

Location: On the front midline, 6 ACI above the umbilicus.
Needle depth: 6 fen
Moxa: 7-15 cones

When to Consider
  • When the Heart is broken: a husband or partner just died or left, a divorce, a loss through death
  • When they can't go on and there's no sparkle left; the spirit is so depleted they have no radiance anymore
  • When there is a palpable joylessness; that's what brokenhearted looks like
  • When early sexual abuse left a person without the heart to deal with it, and they feel so much pain
  • When the spirit is lacking and the person chases recognition and intellectual gain, perhaps living for their work
  • When there is tremendous confusion, a racing Heart or a lack of vitality
  • When someone is too open to outside and emotional stimuli and the Heart is depleted
  • When a person has lost the ability to rule their own life, especially in addiction
  • To gain control of fears, confusion and chaos
  • When the Heart is weak and both purpose and a wider connection to the whole are missing
  • For mental and spiritual exhaustion and lethargy; it revitalizes, recharges and reinforces every level
  • When the person seems in a Yin stupor, eyes clouded as if behind a mist, out of contact with reality
Combinations
  • REN-8 Spirit Deficiency with REN-14: for heartbreak; do REN-14 after REN-8
  • UB-44 Spirit Hall with REN-14: related to the Heart, for heartbreak
  • REN-4 First Gate with REN-14: re-establishes the connection between the Kidney and the Heart
Notes
  • Alarm (Front Mu) point of the Heart
  • Don't do it if a person has heart fibrillations; it's too stimulating
  • Sedate only if everything is out of control
  • Use instead of moxa on REN-8 when there is high blood pressure or a protruding umbilicus
  • Treat this point with great respect: don't use it too soon or before you have the patient's trust. Smooth out the troubles first, then add it as body and mind come together, to give a burst of energy
  • Ju que was also the name of an ancient sword, and the breastbone with the xiphoid was thought to look like one

From Class

  • Ren-14 / Ren-15 (solar plexus): Mu points of the heart but below the diaphragm — transition from being embedded in the unconscious to joining the 'membership collective'; superego/shoulds.
  • Ren-14 Juque & the Gao Huang: Ren-14 region relates to the Gao Huang; embryology's pause here is a rare true emptiness, accessible through life, where Tianji threads can be felt. (Lewis)
  • Ren-14/15 and GB-24 as body signs: Where a belief is felt guides points/herbs: e.g. 'screwdriver' at Ren-14/15, sausage-like distension at GB-24.
  • Diaphragm stasis: Ren-14 + Ren-4 dispersed, LI-6 bled; or SP-17 + KI-4 bled: For CHF/exertional breathlessness (lung qi failing to move blood); LI is yang of the lungs controlling the diaphragm; broken vessels at KI-4 mean jing-level stasis. (Gioioso)
  • Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang vs Ban Xia Hou Po Tang (opening the diaphragm): Both open the diaphragm for plum-pit qi: Ban Xia Hou Po Tang laterally (grief), Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang vertically (digestive); introjects are undigested past.
  • Neroli (orange blossom): Oil that resonates with Ren-14 Juque; apply a drop on the point. (Yuen)
  • Postnatal depression — Heart-Blood deficiency points: HT-5, HT-7, Ren-14, Ren-15, BL-15, LV-8, Du-20, Ren-4, ST-36, SP-6, Du-19, PC-6; reinforcing (Du-19 even); moxa applicable. (Maciocia)
