Emotional Issues

Five Elements Perspective

  • Shut behind a wall: The person stays out of sight, terrified of being seen, like someone who was badly hurt in love; or they have been afraid and cold for so long that they have contracted and can't even tell you who they are. The Kidney–Heart Protector block is the classic picture. UB-60 Kunlun Mountain warms all of that up, for like Water, Fire can be very purifying; KI-22 Walking on the Veranda helps the person feel they can be in the world with their Heart again. Points: KI-22, PC-1, UB-60

From Class

  • Five-element emotional inquiry: Reflect on each element: Earth/worry, Water/fear and surrender, Fire/anxiety and joy without conditions, Metal/grief and letting go, Wood/anger and the vulnerability beneath it. (Lewis)
  • Miasm: Term coined by Hahnemann: an unhealthy vapor of thought, feeling, emotion and sensation sustained by attention — an 'existential knot'.
  • Seven gates and the five elements: Five of the seven gates are the elements; Fire has four meridians, so two extra gates around Fire release the small emotional heart. (Lewis)
  • Triggers by element: Under trigger: water → terror/paranoia; wood → judgment/belligerence; fire → dominance or submission; earth → purging, binge eating, over-giving; metal → indiscriminate clearing out or deep grief.
  • Wind and blood: Blood deficiency leads to wind, so treat blood to treat wind and anchor yang; long-term qi stagnation lodges emotions in the blood, and blood movers dislodge them. (Shea)
