Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

A verandah is an extra space: when you want a breath, you go out to the verandah, take a break and see things fresh and in a different way. It is normally built onto the outside of a house, looking over a garden or a beautiful view, a place to sit in tranquility and breathe fresh air. When someone has been ill, their first few steps are out onto the verandah, outdoors yet safe and protected. Like the verandah, the point is hidden under the breast. There is a peacefulness to walking on the verandah. A verandah also carries a sense of retirement: old folks in their rocking chairs, a rug over their knees. After illness or long confinement in a dark place, it brings the person out a little, to a pleasant place to sit and take in the morning air and sunshine, outside in the real world yet safe and secure, so they can begin to look ahead and think about facing the world again. It is a gentle convalescent treatment that widens their horizons while keeping them connected with their security, with the wonder of the first time out of doors, when everything is fresh, new and enchanting, perhaps even trees, flowers and God.

Worsley

A beautiful verandah, sheltered yet free of confining walls, is a place of healing inspired by the divine, a heaven on earth in which God's love touches us with sublime directness. Picture being ill and shut indoors for a long time, then gently and safely stepping back out among the living to breathe sparkling fresh air; in such a reverie we see past the walls to the whole of creation, in the flowers, trees, water, sky and other people, and our whole being, set free, soars with realization and invigoration.

Location: On the chest in the 5th intercostal space, 2 ACI from the midline, level with REN-16.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 5 cones

When to Consider
  • When a person feels anxious and restless
  • After you have resurrected the spirit (Spirit Burial Ground), to help the person come out of the verandah and be with people; they may have been unable to communicate with other people
  • To help them take the first step to strengthen their spirit
  • When the patient needs some extra something: an extra charge, fresh air
  • For seeing the space, the vision, what is lying ahead
  • If their spirit is exhausted there is no Fire; Water is the pilot light
  • When something from the past is rising to the surface and the unconscious is moving into consciousness; very supportive
  • When it is time to come out, above all in sexuality and sexual power, moving beyond the fear of expressing it
  • For ease and recuperation, with a view of new horizons and positive aims
  • As a convalescent point, after an illness or operation
Combinations
  • KI-24 Spirit Burial Ground followed by KI-22: once the spirit is resurrected, helps the person come out onto the verandah and be with people
  • PC-1 Heavenly Pond with KI-22: clears a Kidney to Pericardium Entry-Exit block
Notes
  • Exit point of the Kidney; it goes from the Kidney into the Heart Protector, so there is a big connection between this point and the Fire element
  • Kidney to Pericardium (KI-22 to PC-1) Entry-Exit block: unable to meet anyone's eyes; extremely shy, deeply afraid of being seen, as though a relationship had burned them badly and they now keep behind a wall; fear of intimacy may keep putting out the Heart fire, leaving them emotionally cold and joyless, or make the Pericardium fire blaze
  • Do not do it in the beginning; do it later
  • Kidney points on the chest can be used on any Causative Factor (CF)
  • All the upper Kidney points (KI-22 to KI-27) give something extra and are used for an extra spirit charge; they are calming, revive the spirit, and help bring ancestral Qi in with the breath
  • Lang may also be read as 'upward path', lifting the spirit
  • Especially good for a Heart Protector CF
  • Read in order, the names of KI-18 to KI-21 tell the story of a journey through darkness. Here the meridian climbs up onto the high ground of the ribs and passes to PC-1; this Entry-Exit link helps a person move from that deep, fearful journey into the joys and pleasures of the Heart Protector
  • The points after the Exit, KI-23 to KI-27, hold the meridian's deepest reserves of spiritual energy, lining the rib cage like the stone figures along the spirit road of an imperial tomb

From Class

  • KI-22 Bulang (Stepping out on the Veranda): First rib-cage point; belongs to Water. KI-22–26 each correspond to an element as Kidney and Shen reconcile. (Lewis)
  • KI-22 to KI-27 (chest 'shu' points): 12 chest shu points (KI-22–27 bilateral), 2 cun from midline, represent the Kidneys and can switch genetic information; rarely needled because of their sacredness. (Yuen)
  • LV-14, GB-24, GB-22 (other chest options): Mentioned as other chest points available, along with Lung, Spleen and Stomach points, when working the chest. (Yuen)
  • Diaphragm entry-exit points: SP-21→HT-1, LV-14→LU-1 (the only one passing qi through the diaphragm), KI-22→PC-1 all pass through the heart region; upper kidney points relate shen and ling (soul).
