Grief

Five Elements Perspective

  • Heartbreak: The Heart is broken: a partner has died or left, there has been a divorce or a death, and the person can't go on; there's no sparkle left, only a palpable joylessness. Heartbreak treatments include REN-15 Dove Tail; REN-14 Great Deficiency with UB-44 Spirit Hall; REN-8 Spirit Deficiency; and REN-8 with REN-14. REN-15 is closer to the Heart Protector, when the hurt comes from loss or deception; REN-14 reaches the Heart itself, when things have been so painful that the person begins to withdraw from their Heart. Points: REN-15, REN-14, UB-44, REN-8
  • Grief that won't move: Grief can be held in the chest and never come down; there may be uncried tears, an inability to cry, and undigested loss. Sadness and grief may affect the Lungs, and some people cannot function at all. UB-42 Soul Door is a great point for deep grief. The Large Intestine–Stomach block holds unmourned loss, and the Liver–Lung block holds anger that keeps the person from grieving. KI-21 Dark Gate, done first, with KI-20 Through the Valley, is a combination for grief. Points: UB-42, LI-20, ST-1, LIV-14, LU-1, KI-21, KI-20

From Class

  • After miscarriage: Don't arrest bleeding while fetal tissue remains; nourish (e.g., Gui Pi Tang) and allow space for grief and fear. (Lewis)
  • Po (Corporeal Soul) & Bei (grief) — Metal / Sixth Gate: The sixth gate is the Bei-Po of Metal, governing grieving and letting go; healthy grief moves down then outward, distorted grief makes Metal rigid; ritual gives grief a vessel. (Lewis)
  • Po as the stones we carry (Nuwa patching the sky): The Po hold sensation and instinct; what isn't processed is stored as a haunting; like Nuwa's stones, our greatest grief, fear and shame are stones we carry. (Lewis)
