Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Welcome Fragrance is about smelling life's joy and beauty, and it affects the mind and spirit. Most people assume that picking up an odor is purely physical; it is not, for it is mental and spiritual as well. This point concerns more than physical fragrance; it is also about newness, letting new experience come in, and about old memories, the way a fragrance lets us relive wonderful moments and times from the past. As the last point on the meridian, it reminds us that letting go of one thing lets us welcome in something new. It helps a person come through the letting go and breathe everything in: what a beautiful day, and how good it smells. Past experiences can be recalled without dwelling in the past. Clears the rubbish from the channel and brings mental and spiritual fragrance, restoring an appreciation of beauty, freshness and new experience.

Worsley

Location: On the face, 1 fen outside the ala (wing) of the nose, at its lower edge.
Needle depth: 1-3 fen
Moxa: No moxa

When to Consider
  • When a person can no longer smell life's joy and beauty
  • When newness and new experience need to be let in
  • When letting go at an ending is needed to welcome in something new
  • When fond memories of the past could nourish the person again
  • When there has been a loss that has not been grieved and the tears have not been cried
Combinations
  • LU-7 Narrow Defile with LI-20: can help clear toxins from the mind and spirit
Notes
  • Exit point of the Large Intestine meridian and meeting point with the Stomach
  • Used with ST-1 Receive Tears to clear a Large Intestine to Stomach (LI-20 to ST-1) Entry-Exit block: a loss that has not been grieved, undigested emotional material being held and an inability to cry
  • Smell is one of the main ways the reality of post-Heaven reaches our inner world, and it shapes how things taste; with ST-1, this point feeds the process by which food and breath support the fires of the Ming Men through post-Heaven Jing
  • Wind and heat here come from being unable to digest life properly and let go of what has lost its essential value

From Class

  • LI-11, LI-1, LI-15, LI-20 (channel opening): Define the area of contention as root, then open the channel both ways — LI-11 to LI-1 and up to LI-15, exit LI-20 (Tom Bisio's 'lock and key'). (Alexander)
  • Yangming and the sensory portals: The Stomach is first to connect to all the sensory orifices; LI-20 links to BL-1 into the eyes, descending to ST-1. (Gioioso)
