ST-1 Chengqi - Receive Tears

More Spirit Names: Containing Tears, Tear Container, Brimming Tears, Face Bone Hole, Mouse Hole, Ravine Hole

English: Container of Tears
Also Known As: Containing Tears
Contain Tears

Location

  • With the eyes looking straight forward, the point is directly below the pupil, between the eyeball and the infraorbital ridge.
  • Located directly inferior to the pupil on the inferior ridge of the orbital cavity.

Needling

  • Push the eyeball upward with the left thumb and puncture perpendicularly and slowly 0.5 to 1 cun along the infraorbital ridge. It is not advisable to manipulate the needle with large amplitude.
  • Straight insertion. Ask the patient to look straight upward, then hold the eyeball secure from below with a finger, and slowly insert the the needle along the lower wall of the orbit to a depth of 1 to 1.5 cun. Sensation: local soreness and distention, occasionally some lachrymation.
  • Caution: It is very common for this point to bleed a bit after needling. This can be stopped by applying pressure for a few moments after the needle is withdrawn. When there is bleeding, there may appear a "purpling" of the skin around the eye. A cold compress can be used first to stop the bleeding, followed by a hot compress. After a week, the purple should disappear. It will not affect the vision. Care should be taken not to insert the needle too deeply to avoid entering the cranial cavity.
  • For myopia, the needle should be inserted transversely toward the inner canthus.
  • Ask the patient to look directly forwards. Use a finger to push the eyeball upwards and insert the needle, first slightly inferiorly, then perpendicularly between the eyeball and the inferior wall of the orbit, 0.5 to 1 cun.
  • Caution: the needle should be inserted slowly without lifting, thrusting or rotating it.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Receive Tears is the first point on the Stomach, the great granary, which receives and holds whatever is taken in, in body, mind and spirit, and begins to break it down. The point's emphasis is less physical and more on the level of mind and spirit, helping the processing and digesting that enriches and enhances the spirit. Before anything can be transformed it must first be received, and this point, near the eye, helps someone acknowledge their distress, let in a new view and move on. At the source of the meridian, it lets a person take in and receive nourishment and may help flush out undigested material, physically and emotionally. The Stomach's role is to digest life and integrate what it brings. Emotional material that has not been digested weighs on us the way undigested food makes us feel heavy, and when the Stomach is compromised the Large Intestine may not be able to let it go, so the person never reaches grief over, for instance, a traumatic loss. Receiving the tears shows the stuck energy has shifted and the experience is being integrated.

Worsley

Location: On the cheek at the orbit's lower border, just above the infra-orbital foramen, in line with the pupil centre when the eye looks straight ahead.
Needle depth: 1-3 fen
Moxa: No moxa

When to Consider
  • When processing and digesting are needed to enrich and enhance the spirit
  • When there are uncried tears from a loss that has not been grieved
  • When a person has been stuck nursing an old hurt or cannot stop chewing the cud mentally
  • When thinking has become circular or obsessive
  • When someone keeps nourishing others rather than letting themselves receive, or when their own needs swallow all their attention
  • When a deficient Stomach leaves the person exhausted
  • When a person cannot cry in painful situations, with the pain locked in and tears that won't come; it brings forth tears of compassion
Notes
  • Entry point of the Stomach meridian; used with LI-20 Welcome Fragrance to clear a Large Intestine to Stomach (LI-20 to ST-1) Entry-Exit block

From Class

  • Yangming and the sensory portals: The Stomach is first to connect to all the sensory orifices; LI-20 links to BL-1 into the eyes, descending to ST-1. (Gioioso)
