Notes

  1. Among the best herbs for Hot Phlegm, it is used mainly in acute conditions.
  2. For Cold Phlegm, it is combined with warming herbs.
  3. It helps with grogginess and congestion on waking.
  4. Rx. Peucedani Qian Hu and Rx. Bupleuri Chai Hu both dispel Wind and relieve the stifling feeling and distention in the chest and epigastrium. Qian Hu transforms Phlegm and descends Qi, and it is used when cough from external Wind Invasion is more prominent. Chai Hu releases the exterior and spreads Liver Qi, and it is used for malarial disorders from external invasion. The two can be combined for external invasion with cough, rebellious Qi, thick sputum and/or malarial disorders. Most sources mention only Wind-Heat.
  5. Qian Hu and Sm. Armeniacae Xing Ren both enter the Lung channel and descend Qi. Qian Hu is cool; it drains Lung Heat and expels Wind-Heat, treating sticky, yellow Phlegm. Xing Ren is warm; it dispels Wind-Cold and relieves wheezing with abundant white Phlegm.
  6. Prepared Peucedani Root Zhi Qian Hu moistens better and so treats dry cough.
  7. Dry-fried Peucedani Root Chao Qian Hu is less cold and harmonizes the Stomach better.
