Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Small Sea is the Earth point: grounding, nurturing, mothering. Being an Earth point, it offers a firm base and grounding; an ungrounded Fire burns erratically until it finally peters out. The alchemist can get heady, and this point reminds you that you are on this Earth and in this body. It is about harvesting, settling down, staying on course and allowing the harvest to come. What does the Fire within the Earth do? Recognize it viscerally, within your body. Rooted in the Earth, this small sea brings gentle support, stability and Earth's nourishment to the Small Intestine; use it when the Official needs to be fed a little. Earth within Fire lays the foundation for the Fire, since everything grows from the Earth, and the old texts spoke of Earth as the center for this reason.

Worsley
  • Worsley gives it as a First Aid point for haemorrhage.
  • As the Earth point, it bears on how well the Spleen carries material away from the Small Intestine, and on how well the Stomach passes along what it has ripened and rotted so that it can be sorted.

Location: On the posteromedial forearm, with the forearm half flexed: find the hollow lying between the humerus's medial epicondyle and the olecranon; the point is 1 ACI distal to it.
Needle depth: 2 fen
Moxa: 3-5 cones

When to Consider
  • When a Small Intestine Causative Factor (CF) is muddled and confused and might just need a feeling of being settled and comfortable within themselves
  • When the person has gotten heady and needs to come back to the Earth and the body
  • When the person needs to settle down, stay on course and allow the harvest to come
  • When suspicion has taken the place of trust and agitation is heating up
  • When the Heart needs calming
  • When there is a great deal to sort: Earth gives the security of a firm place to stand while sorting
  • When a person is hyperactive or over-reactive and needs to find their center
  • When the senses are dulled and the person's experience of life feels flat, because the Earth within the Fire is lacking
Notes
  • Earth point and Sedation point of the Small Intestine
  • This sea is also important as a primordial source
  • Small Sea recalls the Stomach, the Sea of Grain, which feeds the five organs, themselves called the sea of the channels; the name underlines this point's tie with Earth
