Contraindications

  • Some sources say that this point is forbidden to moxa.

Notes

  • This is the main point to clear Lung Full Heat.
  • If the skin is cold, silvery and flaky, tonify.
  • If the skin is hot, ugly and red, reduce.
  • This point is used if the patient is very rigid in his outlook and needs warmth.
  • Herbs that parallel LU-10 in clearing Lung Heat: Huang Qin, Sang Bai Pi, Di Gu Pi.
  • For Lung Heat (as opposed to Phlegm-Heat at LU-5) the related formula is Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang.
  • Because the Lung channel passes through the throat, LU-10 as the Fire point clears Heat and Fire Toxin from both the Lungs and the throat.
  • Accurate location matters: the point lies exactly between the bone and the flesh of the thenar eminence at the midpoint of the first metacarpal, and needling slightly off this spot is very painful.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Remember the supreme connection between Fire and Metal: to function, Metal has to be at the right temperature. It conducts heat without holding on to it, which is why the patient is cut off once it gets too cold. Warmth is the basis of the emotions, and Metal connects us to our Creator, so within that there must be warmth, Fire and love. The Fish, symbol of Christ, the Eternal Father, is a sign of plenty; through this point the vision of Universal Love can be reawakened. Its fire is greater than any volcano; it brings warmth to the Father himself and links the patient strongly with the Father. Like the Middle Palace, it enriches and nourishes. A person can hold on too tightly to the Mother, to food and earthly comfort, when what they lack is time with the Father, the air. Fire warms Metal and the spirit so they can be molded into something new. Metal tends to cling to the old, but we are always in the process of becoming. Here there is richness and plenty, of universal love and recognition: the highest nourishment for body, mind and spirit. The fish refers to that nourishment and to a sense of higher purpose, purity, the spirit, God or the Father; in early times the fish was a symbol of the divine and of mystical union.

Worsley

Location: In the middle of the thenar eminence.
Needle depth: 3-5 fen
Moxa: No moxa

When to Consider
  • For the cold person, the "don't touch me" person; it brings the warmth of Fire into the Metal
  • When the person feels very cut off and can cut you off a lot
  • When the person is lacking emotional warmth and receptivity
  • When the patient's outlook is very rigid and they need warmth; Metal that turns rigid or cold looks like stubbornness, and this point moves the energy to bring out their own brilliance and essence
  • When inertia has set in
  • When the person is going against the current of life; it helps them keep going with the current, with the flow of life
  • When the patient needs to see that it's worth getting well
  • To help the person communicate directly with the God within, the life force, the Spirit, bringing the spark back
  • To help people see the light within; it feeds the spirit and the mind and enhances the quality of thought
  • For depression, desperation and isolation
  • When grief has become so dense, heavy, inert and frozen that the person feels nothing else; it lets them know joy exists even amid what they carry and lightens the grief
  • When desperation keeps a person from communicating with the Heart within
  • When the person is brittle and stuck in old ways; it helps Metal be less cold, rigid and sharp
  • When the patient has missed the warmth and comfort they need
Notes
  • Fire point. Among the body's most powerful points, and the most powerful in Metal
  • Moxa forbidden: Fire here could easily destroy Metal, so no moxa until one is very experienced
  • Fire of the Spirit: it brings warmth, joy and love to the spirit, warming the spirit and the Metal and making it softer, so the person won't be as rigid. It rekindles the Spirit essence and enables people to breathe more deeply on all levels
  • Ask: is it the element that's deficient, or the warmth that's lacking? This point is for when it's cold
  • Cut flowers are going towards death; potted flowers are moving towards life. Sometimes moving towards life is really difficult for us, and sometimes people need to move away from where they are, because if they stay they stagnate
  • In the Chinese view the fish was the food of essential purity and represents the life that remains in the depths of the oceans: bringing that which is hidden, precious and valuable into the light, like beautiful Oriental painted screens bringing forth the beauty and essence of who we are
  • Physician, heal thyself: the balance of body, mind and spirit
  • Cold Metal symptoms don't always mean Fire is lacking; Metal may simply have become disconnected from Fire. Love, which is giving and receiving at heart, needs a link between Heart and Lungs

From Class

  • LU-10 Yuji: Bled for heat in the blood in anemia with inflammation markers; look for visible varicose/occluded vessels at luo points. (Yuen)
  • LU-10 Yuji (left) — five-element view: Beyond clearing heat as the fire point: summons the heat of the Heart to soften the Metal, so rigid cycles can flow more regularly. (Fuggman)
  • ST-40 Fenglong: Bled at its luo point for heat in the blood (low RBC with raised inflammation markers) since heat is produced by the stomach. (Yuen)
  • KI-4 Dazhong: Bled at the luo point where veins are occluded near the inner ankle, for anemia with heat in the blood. (Yuen)
  • TCM alternative: BL-17, LU-10, LU-1, ST-38, LU-7: Diaphragmatic constriction with lung heat: BL-17, LU-10 clears lung heat, LU-1 disperses, ST-38 for shoulder; bleed then moxa LU-7. (Yuen)
  • Heat in the blood with anemia — bleed first: Low RBC plus raised sed rate, CO2 or total protein = heat in blood; treat by bleeding luo points to clear heat before it causes hemorrhage. (Yuen)
