Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Ancestors are a repository of wisdom, and in Chinese culture they are honored and consulted. We have that faculty within us: the Shen is our guiding spirit, and with a mature Shen we get wise guidance. Using this point is like gathering a great council of a person's great grandmothers and grandfathers, who have already seen and done it all and can offer wise counsel from a high and heavenly perspective: 'You can trust this one' or 'Take care here.' Whether we understand the ancestors literally or as the wisdom of our higher selves, drawing on it reassures us that we are not alone, so we can meet each situation with fresh eyes instead of through the veils of past pain. Telling friend from foe takes more than the physical eyes or the reasoning mind; it takes seeing with the spirit. That kind of guidance lets a person respond to others straight away, by instinct. It fills a person with the joy they did not receive growing up, bringing the warmth and feeling of community inside. The family matters more than the individual here, and the point helps a person mature. Reverence for ancestors is older than acupuncture itself, and we must stay in harmony with the dead as well as the living. This point gathers the energy of the ancestral spirits and brings purpose and strength.

Worsley

Opens the way to the elders' ancient sacred wisdom, whose guidance gives every part of our being equal consideration, attention and loving care. Such eternal blessings foster inner harmony and balance and light our life with love's warm glow.

  • When the patient has no idea where to go next, this point brings a feeling of calm and stability.
  • Here you can draw on the Supreme Wisdom to clear the chaos. The ancestors can carry a person back to where they were before they got stuck, and it is a good point for older people. It acts as a secondary source point, a small reservoir off the main river.

Location: On the back of the forearm, 3 ACI above the wrist crease, between radius and ulna, ½ ACI medial to SJ-6.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 5-7 cones

When to Consider
  • When a person just does not listen and needs to contact their own experience so they can mature
  • When there is silly joy, superficial interaction and immature Fire
  • When a Fire person has been so deeply or so frequently hurt in relationships that they have shut down their fire and built a cold, impenetrable shell
  • When someone cannot tell whom they can trust, or how much of themselves can safely be expressed
  • When opening the Inner Frontier Gate has not been enough
  • When there is confusion and the person needs the support and belonging of an extended family
  • When life feels jangly and discordant and the Three Heater is losing control
  • When the energy on the Three Heater is blocked and not showing any real movement
  • When reasoning and analysis cannot settle the patient's questions of trust and openness
  • When the patient cannot judge how much of themselves to give or hold back in a relationship
  • For making peace with a family member who has died, or for estrangement from one's ancestors, living or dead
  • When a person does not know where they are going and is running in circles chasing their own tail
  • When the Three Heater is not strong enough to feel and take in the warmth that is present
  • When everything else has been tried
  • For someone who needs guidance, comfort, security and calm, seeing from a higher, elder perspective
  • For people lost in the wilderness, or who join cults to revive a deficient spirit
  • When a person asks, "Who can help me? Where do I go now?"
  • To lead a person back to the spot where they became stuck
Combinations
  • SJ-6 Branch Ditch with SJ-7: can be very powerful when the Three Heater is showing no real movement
Notes
  • Accumulation (Xi Cleft) point of the Three Heater
  • Almost equal to DU-20 in returning control; brings calm, peace and tranquility
  • Helps a person attune appropriately in their relationships with others and with society
  • The Three Heater keeps the warmth balanced among the burning spaces where the Officials live; outwardly, that becomes the constant fine-tuning of warmth in our relationships
  • Akin to DU-19 and DU-20, though not quite as powerful
  • Knowing the patterns of one's lineage helps a person grow into their own maturity and stay centered in their dealings with others
  • A good point for older people
  • In ancient China the summer meeting of officials was called zong; since the Three Heater is a Fire Official and so to summer, the name may echo that summertime gathering, this being the Accumulation point, a gathering of fire, on a Fire channel
