Contraindications

  • Do not use moxa if the patient suffers from high Blood pressure.

Notes

  • This point can tonify when a person is fragmented but not acute.
  • This point is considered to be the upper Dan Tian.
  • This point may be bled to treat severe Excess conditions.
  • It may be treated with moxibustion for Deficiency conditions.
  • It calms and relaxes.
  • DU-20 raises Spleen Yang in patterns of Deficiency Above and Excess Below.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

One Hundred Meetings is the highest point on the head, where the hundred spirits meet. Wood's essence is in it: perspective on what life means, for the individual and for humankind, and on what the right way is. It carries the person on to another level of being and understanding. It truly draws things together; the ancestors who hold wisdom and knowledge must be reached, and you can embody the wisdom and essence of the point. It gives a vantage point far and wide, an awareness of life that puts everything in its place, and gathers all the Officials together when there is chaos. The ancestors gathered here have seen the pattern and the cycle before, and they put the person in touch with the elders' inner wisdom; whatever the problem, however horrendous, it can be made better. It summons all of a person's spiritual resources to restore Heaven's order to their inner kingdom. In myth a sage-king convened the hundred spirits on a mountaintop and brought spiritual unity to ancient China, beheading the rebellious lord who opposed the wind and would have broken the ritual; so this point, where the hundred spirits meet on the mountaintop of the head, clears wind and chaos. It aligns us with the polestar, honored by every lesser star.

Worsley
  • Worsley uses this point in his Seven Dragons treatment for clearing External Demons. He counts it among the points of the Sea of Bone Marrow.

Location: On the midline of the head, 7 ACI above DU-15.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 7 cones

When to Consider
  • When the person is fragmented, though not acutely, with weakness and depletion
  • When there is deep depression
  • When there is a disconnection from a sense of purpose and the person feels scattered within themselves
  • When there is mental confusion and dullness
  • When yang is in excess, with aggressive, berserk behavior (sedate)
  • When the spirit is agitated by fear, with shock, fright, fearful anxiety or panic attacks
  • When chaos shows as rapidly shifting signs such as spasms, seizures, headaches or violent bursts of anger; it centers at the most basic level, restores control and marshals the patient's resources
  • When the pulses on both hands have collapsed and the last Yang floats to the surface with no depth (with REN-1, to root the Yang in Yin)
  • When the person is very tight and tense; it calms all the Officials
Combinations
  • DU-19 Posterior Summit with DU-20: a combination for deep depression
  • DU-21 Anterior Summit with DU-20: can be used together
  • Yintang with DU-20: 'nature's tranquilizer' for an agitated psyche and spirit
Notes
  • Tonify for fragmentation; it pulls everything together, after which you can go on to a regular Command point treatment
  • No moxa if there are heat signs, high blood pressure, or a history of mania alternating with depression
  • Lifts the spirit and clears the mind
  • The DU-20 to DU-25 sequence is best for drawing Yin energy upward; sedate if the person is too Yang
  • With REN-1 it forms the central axis of Heaven and Earth in a human being; treating them together can restore primordial balance and open up a reserve of this energy
  • Where DU-20 works with the Shen, the Spirit, DU-14 works with the Yang Qi

From Class

  • LI-4, Du-20, LU-7 for the family: Points to help family members let go. (Lewis)
  • HT-7, PC-6, Yintang, Du-20 (Sishencong), BL-47: Gently settle agitation during the dying process without forcing consciousness into any particular state. (Lewis)
  • KI-1 to Du-20 (eros): Eros = creative upward thrust from KI-1 to Du-20 along the left (sheng) side of the cycle; the hun as creative visioning spirit.
  • GB-20, Yintang, GB-8, Du-20: GB-20 best for wind and a doorway to the brain; Yintang resonates with hun; combine GB-8, GB-20, Du-20 geometrically to summon the hun. (Shea)
  • Du-16 Fengfu & Du-20 Baihui — memory/PTSD: Du-16 coordinates memory, getting experiences out of the brain (PTSD); add Du-20 when thoughts are disorganized; work the portals. (Gioioso)
  • Du-20 + Ren-12 + KI-1 (acclimating to dry weather): 'Three treasures' variant (Du-20, Ren-12, KI-1) helps acclimate to dry climates so the body hydrates better; add LU-1 and LV-13 for external pathways. (Yuen)
  • Du-20 + ST-36 moxa (community protocol): A colleague taught a community group to moxa Du-20 and ST-36 weekly for developmentally delayed children; all improved. (Resnick)
  • Du-20 Baihui: Hundred Meetings, the peak where heaven and earth unite; divergent point of the San Jiao; where the individual mind opens to the Dao. (Lewis)
  • Du-20 Baihui (Crown Gate): Heavenly threads are released here at death; in near-death experiences yang ascends but doesn't exit Du-20, so life's tie remains (teacher's interpretation). (Lewis)
  • Du-20 Baihui / Sishencong: Most resonant with the hun as ethereal messenger; Du-20 also resolves wind. (Shea)
  • Du-20 Baihui vs Du-16 Fengfu: Ling Shu 33: sea of marrow — Du-20 brings yang up (prolapse, memory, resuscitation); Du-16 brings yang down (wind, BP, seizures, nosebleeds). (Yuen)
  • Du-20 Baihui with Sishencong: Baihui in the center and the four surrounding Sishencong points, where heaven and earth meet through the body's vertical channel. (Lewis)
  • Du-20, Ren-4, KI-7: Boost Kidney qi (very quiet Kidney pulses). (Fuggman)
  • Add-ons: Du-20, GB-21, HT-7 + BL-40: Scalloped tongue/deficient pulse: add Du-20; wiry liver/GB pulse: GB-21; heart fire: HT-7 with BL-40 (a Ma Danyang heavenly star point). (Alexander)
  • Core anxiety points: HT-7, LV-3, PC-6, Ren-17 + Du-20, Yintang: HT-7, LV-3, PC-6, Ren-17 for anxiety, plus the brain, 'house of the original shen': Du-20 and Yintang (skip Yintang face-down). (Piao)
  • Exit points of the spirits: Du-20, Du-1, Jingming: Shen leaves through Du-20, po through the anus (Du-1, once Po Men), hun through the eyes (BL-1) or mouth — areas to anoint before burial. (Yuen)
  • Four Gates / Five Gates (Laogong, Yongquan, Baihui): 'Four gates' are palm and sole centers (PC-8, KI-1), 'five gates' add Du-20 — where life force can escape; seal them in meditation after purifying. (Johnson)
  • Horizontal 'chakra' levels: ankles, knees, hips/groin, Ren-1, Ren-8, Ren-12, Ren-15, Ren-17, Ren-22, Yintang, Du-20: Levels where repression shows as tightness/symptoms; treat with Ren and Du points at that level plus Chong (KI/ST channel) points, and inner/outer bladder line points.
  • Maternal taxation: ST-36, Du-20, KI-16, Tituo: Extreme fatigue: ST-36, Du-20, KI-16 and Tituo lift and hold; Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang idea, but Sheng Ma and Chai Hu can over-dry yin-deficient patients. (Lewis)
  • Pre-Ge Hong revival points: Du-20, Du-15, Ren-12, Ren-3, LI-19: For death-like inversion: Du-20 and Du-15 (scalp yang), Ren-12 and Ren-3 (yin), plus LI-19 to start breathing again. (Yuen)
  • Urinary issues/fetal drop: BL-23, Du-4, BL-63, KI-3, KI-7, Du-20; damp-heat: BL-22, BL-28, BL-32, BL-53, BL-63, SP-9: Kidney weakness: Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan with these points; Spleen sinking: Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang, BL-20, Du-20, ST-36, BL-28; damp-heat: Zi Shen Tang. (Lewis)
  • Wind-draining points: Du-16, Du-19, Du-20, GB-37, GB-20, GB-21: Draining liver wind too fast causes dizziness (re-triggering content); marijuana disinhibits the liver too quickly (red eyes, dry mouth, then paranoia).
  • Dai Mai for diabetes: Opening the Dai reduces visceral fat and accesses the pancreas (LV-13, GB-26–28); Li Shizhen: moxa Ren-6, then GB-26, and Du-20 to raise yang. (Rabinowitz)
  • Du Mai and the brain/HPA axis: Du-16 to Du-17 for the hypothalamus–pituitary axis (Yintang can be added); Du-20 and Yintang for the pineal; Du-4 for the adrenals. (Rabinowitz)
  • Original Chong / Taiji pole (Du-20 to Ren-1): The Daoist inner vertical axis from Du-20 to Ren-1 is the original Chong, where the mandate of heaven is communicated and Yi, Zhi and Shen align. (Lewis)
  • San Jiao divergent: The San Jiao divergent begins at Du-20, goes to SJ-16 Tianyou, down to ST-12, spreading into the chest and three burners and communicating with the Pericardium. (Yuen)
  • San Jiao — great communicator; divergent at the crown: The San Jiao has no structure, only function like the Dao; it coordinates relationship and movement through the whole body. Its divergent channel reaches the crown (Du-20). (Lewis)
  • Double-terminated quartz image in the central channel: Visualize the fused three dantians as a double-terminated quartz from Huiyin to Baihui, linking Soul Star–Pole Star and Earth Star. (Johnson)
  • Jade (Yu) in burial: Stone of completion/eternity: noble burials placed jade in the mouth, rectum, and on Baihui or Yintang under a cap — the three openings where the spirit escapes. (Yuen)
  • 13 Ghost Points as four trinities (at/after death): Four trinities moxa'd or touched after death to free what is bound: Du-20, LU-11, SP-1; PC-7, BL-62, Du-16; ST-6, Ren-24, PC-8; Du-23, Ren-1, LI-11; plus Yintang. (Lewis)
  • Anointing the Seven Stars of the Great Dipper: Anoint seven levels of the central axis from Ren-1/Du-1 up to Du-20 so the spirits ascend through the crown; front Ren points can substitute for back Du points. (Lewis)
  • Nine Peaks treatment: Builds on the Seven Heavenly Star Prayer: add GB-30 and GB-34 to strengthen yang, or LU-7 and HT-5 to nourish yin and soften the heart; ends at Du-20. (Lewis)
  • Postnatal depression — Heart-Blood deficiency points: HT-5, HT-7, Ren-14, Ren-15, BL-15, LV-8, Du-20, Ren-4, ST-36, SP-6, Du-19, PC-6; reinforcing (Du-19 even); moxa applicable. (Maciocia)
