Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

This is the mother's loving breast, creating birth, growth and determination for the body, mind and spirit as it carries Wood to Fire. It pours and flows in rather than rushing, since the Heart must receive energy in the correct quantity: think of governing the fire through how much fuel comes through. It lends Fire the qualities of birth and growth, and the determination to get up and get going. A safe, gentle place to feed, fuel and secure the spirit without overwhelming it, with a mother's care. It brings rebirth and growth, the ability to lead and to take the next step.

Worsley

Location: At the nail point on the radial (thumb-facing) side of the little finger.
Needle depth: 1 fen
Moxa: 3-5 cones

When to Consider
  • When Fire needs birth and growth, and the determination to get up and get going
  • When a surge of energy is needed in the meridian
  • For emotional exhaustion and depression
  • To bring a person back to alertness and consciousness, on any level
  • When the emotional fire has gone out: a safe way to raise the Fire just a little
  • In women it moves the Blood, which carries the emotions; in men it moves the Qi, for someone who is problem-solving, overly defended or disheveled
  • When the person needs to look before they leap: trust means keeping the eyes open as well as the Heart
  • When the Wood burns so hot that the Heart becomes agitated, and a sense of rushing shows in everything the person does
  • When the Fire is cut off from Wood's vision: the Emperor has no joy and the person drifts without aim, like a leaf in the wind, with no guiding light from the Heart
Notes
  • Exit point, Tonification point, Wood point
  • There must never be a great rush into the heart. When the heart is low, take care not to bring in so much Wood that the fire goes out
  • Lies at the Heart channel's final point, where its Qi pours inward; 'Lesser' refers to the amount of Qi, or to its place on the Hand Lesser Yin channel
  • As the Wood point it can strengthen the Heart's ability to see ahead, joining the work of the Liver and Heart Officials and harmonizing their relationship

From Class

  • ST-40, ST-45, HT-9 (agitation from heat): When heat agitates the Heart and stirs the Shen, ST-40, ST-45 and HT-9 reduce excitability and irritability. (Lewis)
  • HT-9 Shaochong / HT-5: Open the portals (orifices); the pericardium channel lacks a point for this. (Gioioso)
  • HT-9 Shaochong — Prosperity/Reputation palace: Opens the heart and supports authentic self-expression not dependent on others' approval. (Lewis)
  • Clear the shen: ST-40, ST-45, HT-9: Heart and stomach are the most yang of their groups, so act most on the spirit. (Yuen)
  • Jing-well indications (overview): Jing-wells open the portals and resuscitate yang: PC-9, SI-1, HT-9 for behavior change; LU-11, LI-1 throat; SP-1 stops bleeding; HT-9 tongue pain, heart attack. (Gioioso)
  • Orifice-opening points by archetype: LI-1, ST-7, SI-1, PC-9, HT-9, KI-1, BL-63: Yang channels open orifices: LI-1, ST-7, SI-1; yin exceptions PC-9, HT-9, KI-1; water: BL-63 Jinmen (his favorite); not all jing-wells open orifices. (Yuen)
  • Heart channel as 'an ode to the journey' (citing Jeffrey Yuen): From axilla to little finger, the Heart channel reflects the lessons of being human; its nine points correspond to the nine heart pains / nine palaces. (Lewis)
  • Reverse five-element release sequence: Release the elements in reverse: Metal LU-11, Fire HT-9 (or PC-9), Water KI-2, Earth SP-21, Wood LV-14. (Lewis)
