Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Encircling Glory is a circle of protection around the patient, for when the patient needs security. It is the highest point of the Spleen meridian, close to the compassionate Heart. Worsley likened the support Earth gives us to what a mother gives her child, and this point gives a fragile person that gentle holding, so the spirit can settle and flourish. Its connection is more with the Lung than with the Heart, a Metal energy that lets a person be held in their own beauty and grace (Secondary source). Like being wrapped in the mother's arms, it surrounds us with understanding, love, compassion, comfort, support and security, and spreads the energy transformed by the Stomach so it is available everywhere: uplifting, more than satisfying, glorious and truly rich.

Worsley

Location: On the chest in the 2nd intercostal space, 6 ACI from the midline.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 5 cones

When to Consider
  • When the patient needs security and a circle of protection around them
  • When someone seems fragile and cut loose from the earth
  • When the mind and spirit need steadying and nourishing
  • When a person needs a mother's security and reassurance but the practitioner should not come too close
  • When over-caretaking has left a void of depletion to be filled
Notes
  • Lies just below LU-1, a reminder of the Tai Yin connection of Spleen and Lung
  • Sedating it may bring relaxation of agitation on the spirit level

From Class
