Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Heavenly Palace is concerned with the quality of spiritual essence: the Creator's Palace, Palace of Soul and Spirit. Here the spirit can be fed, tended and revitalized, and any uncleanness that has defiled it can be washed away. Picture the Spirit passing through the Middle Palace and the Cloud Gate to arrive at this wonderful place, the finest palace of all. Few points are as dynamic and spiritually uplifting. It is the Emperor's palace, bringing clarity, peace and steadiness to a person lost in darkness and confusion. It is a safe place where one has what is needed. A palace of ultimate richness that makes life worth living: a quality only the father can give, connected with the royal family and the crown jewels and charged with a lineage of quality. It wipes the dark, smoky soot off the window and opens it so the light comes in and the person can see, letting filth out and light in. The character for palace means a building where records are kept, the storehouse of eternity; knowing Heaven sees the best in us helps us clear the slate and find our own best. The Lung's virtue is justice: the Liver's is human justice, always a matter of judgment and compromise, while the Lung's is heavenly justice, which always repays injury with our original nature, the very basis of self-worth.

Worsley
  • Worsley gives it as a First Aid point for poison.

Location: On the anterolateral upper arm, along the outer border of biceps, 6 ACI above the elbow crease. Locate it in the anatomical position: arm straight and turned outward at the shoulder, forearm fully supinated.
Needle depth: 4-6 fen
Moxa: No moxa

When to Consider
  • When a person needs more clarity
  • When a person needs help to receive and let in, and to be more receptive; it takes them to a safe place inside so they are able to be more in the world
  • When a person doesn't want to be in the world
  • When a person feels there is something they need to see, or may remember a trauma they buried
  • When a person feels shut in or closed off inside themselves
  • To lead a person back to a more meaningful way of living, revealing the essence of life that has been missing for them
  • For emotional problems that come from a Lung disharmony: depression, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, forgetfulness and mental confusion
  • For trust, communication and receptivity, and for their relationship with the rest of the universe, with all that happens beyond their skin
  • When the Lungs are out of touch with quality in life and the person feels empty inside, grieving what they have lost or longing for what has eluded them
  • For people who have withdrawn because they have lost touch with their own inner nobility and majesty
Combinations
  • LU-1 Middle Palace with LU-3 Heavenly Palace: for an enriching effect
  • LU-7 Narrow Defile with LU-3 Heavenly Palace: when the spirit needs release and refreshing
Notes
  • Window of the Sky point: use with care and respect. Do Windows of the Sky when the person is ready; the person will tell you, at some level, that there is something they need to see
  • For a Metal Causative Factor (CF)
  • A person may need to be taken there only once and can then live for a long while on what they discover there
  • Don't take the patient to this palace before they're ready: it may bring an aggravation, or they may not appreciate what they see; it is said that opening it before its time can leave a person blinded and unhinged
  • An important mental point for balance
  • Self-worth differs from self-esteem (LIV-1): self-esteem rests on a clear view of which roots of one's life cannot be compromised, while self-worth rests on respecting the value of that fundamental vision

From Class

  • LU-3 Tianfu — grief: Helps process grief. (Fuggman)
  • LU-3 Tianfu — moxa after death: Moxa over LU-3 after death releases remaining tension and 'exorcises' the body; ghost points help the soul not wander (in life, used for mental illness). (Lewis)
  • BL-10, GB-3 (lift toward heaven) & LU-3, HT-7 (grief) for the bereaved: For family who have difficulty grieving and letting go. (Lewis)
  • Head stasis: GV-16 + GV-26 needled toward each other; bleed LU-3, LU-5, LU-6: For cerebral swelling/brain bleeds/stroke; LU-3 'window of the sky'; same lung combo for spitting blood. (Gioioso)
  • Hyperemesis — treat the Po: LU-3, LU-7, BL-42: Resistant hyperemesis: treat the Po (which can 'say no' to the incoming soul in trimester one) — LU-3 calms Po, LU-7 regulates Ren, BL-42 for agitated vomiting. (Lewis)
  • Month 9 Shen/Po points: HT-4, HT-7, LU-3, LU-7, BL-42; avoid LI-11: Calm the spirit and Po; avoid LI-11 this month. (Lewis)
  • Sun Simiao combination: SJ-13, LU-3, ST-11: Sun Simiao's goiter combination opens the clavicle area from inside (ST-11 below the clavicle); LU-3 is a Window of Sky point. (Rabinowitz)
