Location

  • 3 cun lateral to the laryngeal prominence, lateral to ST-9 Renying and in the posterior margin of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
  • On the lateral side of the neck, level with the tip of the Adam's apple, between the sternal head and clavicular head of the m. sternocleidomastoideus.
  • Level with the laryngeal prominence, located just between the two heads of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
Note: Palpation of the sternal and clavicular heads is made easier if the patient turns the head away from the side to be needled while you apply resistance to the chin. The point may be located 3 cun (one handbreadth) from the laryngeal prominence.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Support and Rush Out is the Window of the Sky point on the Colon. At root we must be able to see that letting go of something brings something good back in its place. We need to trust and recognize that letting go will leave us with something, and to have the balance and perspective to recognize that we can release and move on. It relates especially to the free expression of the energies of the Lungs, the energies of human bonding, of forming and breaking relationships, of letting go and of grieving and bereavement. It lets light into a daunting situation and supports body, mind and spirit as old rubbish is cleared. A huge clearing out, a great flushing away of negativity and of attachments that have outlived their purpose. When someone clings to the old and cannot release it bit by bit, it supports the cleansing by offering something worthwhile in place of what is discarded: a gift, a link with Heaven, a vision of something finer, a sense of who one is once the rubbish and hoarding are gone. Feeling connected to the eternal, the person can let go of what is no longer fitting.

Worsley

Location: Between the two heads of sternocleidomastoid, out to the side of the laryngeal prominence and level with its midpoint, also level with ST-9.
Needle depth: 4 fen
Moxa: 3 cones

When to Consider
  • When a patient is stuck in an unhelpful position, entrenched, with something almost festering
  • When someone lacks the trust that letting go will bring something good in return
  • When a person has suffered loss and feels lonely and shut off, but finds it hard to break out of the prison they have made for themselves
  • When someone finds it hard to shake off their depression's dark heaviness and rediscover the lightness and pleasure of being alive
  • When a person is bogged down in loss, isolation, resentment and the past and cannot see the next step to take
  • When the stuckness shows physically as mucus or a cough stuck in the throat, thyroid or glandular swelling, or difficulty with speech
  • For someone unaware even that they are holding on, with no glimpse that they could be different or of how what they cling to adds to their suffering
  • When a Large Intestine overworked with clearing rubbish stirs up anger; the spirit of Metal needs touching
  • When you sense that tears need to come
  • When the baggage of ideas, opinions, painful experiences, shame, pride and arrogance keeps the person from seeing clearly what no longer serves them and from facing their dark side; it lets them see what truly has value
  • For holding on to the past or yearning for the future: it can help release past grief and direct the longing to a deep level of spirit
Combinations
  • LI-4 Joining of the Valleys with LI-18: further strengthens its power to let go and open new perspectives

Notes
  • Window of the Sky point: use with care and respect, once trust is built
  • Used only as a Window of the Sky point
