Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Great Oneness is for someone who needs body, mind and spirit to be one. The pulses will have a spinning quality, as if body, mind and spirit were each spinning at its own rate; the pulse picture may look good while the patient is actually in dire straits. This point cements body, mind and spirit so the three move as one. As the One splits into Heaven and Earth, it also helps separate the clear from the turbid. Its image is a child being fed at the mother's breast: not two separate beings but joined as one by her holding arms. At the breast there is no sense of separation from the divine, between good and bad, or between self and others: one whole, taking in nourishment. A great many people feel insecure, unloved, without their feet on the ground and with no richness or harvest, and this point returns them to the breast, restoring the 'great oneness' and a harvest for body, mind and spirit. It brings Earth, Man and Heaven together. In that oneness, always joined to the earth, a person can take sustenance from everyone and everything, and every experience becomes a treasure and a lesson. The Stomach breaks everything down into a meaningful, integrated whole. Passing through the gates of ST-21 and ST-22, we arrive at unity, harmony and peace.

Worsley

Location: On the abdomen, 3 ACI from the midline and 2 ACI above the umbilicus level, beside REN-10.
Needle depth: 8 fen
Moxa: 5-10 cones

When to Consider
  • When body, mind and spirit seem to be spinning at different rates and need to move together
  • When the pulse picture looks good yet the patient is actually in dire straits
  • When a person shows signs of coming apart in body, mind or spirit
  • When someone needs to come back to their center, a place of nourishment and security
  • When a person's life looks like a jumble of unrelated, fragmented experiences; it integrates them so the person can move on
  • When one part of a person moves forward while others lag behind, the spirit ahead of or behind body and mind, as if waiting for something to catch up: "Some day I'll get to it..."
  • For someone always on the go who cannot settle into themselves and has no idea of peace, meditation or oneness
  • For the wound of a separated family, mother, father and child, linking all back together and letting Mother Earth hold you
  • For great sadness and depression, with lethargic, aimless pacing
Notes
  • After this point the pulse picture will probably look terrible, because the true situation becomes apparent
  • Can be used after balance has been reached, so the oneness is evenly shared
  • Has a very profound effect

From Class

  • Quiet the shen: ST-23, ST-24, HT-3 to HT-6: For yin emotions (depression, fear). (Yuen)
