Contraindications

Notes

  • This is the most important point to resolve Phlegm in all of its manifestations and in all areas of the body. It eliminates visible and invisible Phlegm.
  • This is also considered the pre-eminent point to treat chest pain.
  • This point brings up general energy.
  • If the patient has no reserves, nothing to call upon, stimulate this point with moxa.
  • This is the best point for spasms and paralysis, especially in the lower extremities.
  • This point resonates like thunder.
  • This point joins with all of the Yang channels in the head region.
  • The Stomach Lou-connecting channel ends in the throat.
  • Stomach Luo vessel: Arises on the lateral lower leg at ST-40. Crosses to the medial lower leg to join the SP channel. Rises up the leg and trunk to the nape of the neck and the head, where it merges with the Qi of the other yang channels. Then runs internally and ends at the throat. Symptoms of the Stomach Luo: Depressive and manic mental disorders, muscular atrophy and weakness of the lower leg, congested and sore throat, sudden hoarseness of voice, (epilepsy).
  • Herbal parallels: Ban Xia and Yuan Zhi; related formulas are Er Chen Tang and Wen Dan Tang.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Abundant Splendor is a wonderful reserve that raises an abundant supply of energy, lending the Official light and richness and giving a weak Stomach a reservoir so it can create new strength. It is much used for the spirit when someone feels their life lacks a harvest. This point fills up the granary; we are so disconnected from the gratefulness of earth, and nature is the source of our sustenance. To receive the harvest we must work and toil, yet many struggle through life and reap none at all; this point lets a person glimpse the harvest that could be theirs. Picture a child at its mother's breast: abundance, richness, quality and light to Earth. Nothing here is dark; energy is plentiful, a full harvest of love, joy and nourishment.

Worsley
  • For Worsley, Abundant Splendour together with People Welcome captures the essence of the Stomach Official more than any other point. The name calls up the close of harvest, with every gift of Nature gathered and stored for the year ahead and all that wealth laid out to choose from and feed upon. When the Stomach Official is ill there is no better point for reconnecting it with that essence, and through it for feeding every other Official in body, mind and spirit. He notes that it is a junction point, as is Prince's Grandson on the Spleen, as if to underline the wealth these two partner Officials hold and share.

Location: On the anterolateral lower leg, 8 ACI above the level of the lateral malleolus prominence, 1 ACI lateral to ST-38.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 3-5 cones

When to Consider
  • When a person feels a lack of harvest in their life
  • When someone struggles through life and gets no harvest at all
  • When a person does not feel satisfied
  • When there is no sense of abundance and the person is far away from its meaning and connection
  • When there are mental Earth problems, such as ghosts, obsessions and being out of contact with the Earth
  • When there is anxiety, circular worry or butterflies in the stomach
  • When a person is very anxious, fearful or phobic, or their thoughts keep going round in circles
  • When a person feels burdened by the usual sources of nourishment, family, friends or career; it helps turn the burden into receiving abundance
  • When a person needs reminding of life's splendor and abundance, so the glass looks half full and not empty
  • When there are no reserves and nothing to call on, no contact with the Earth and no gravity: "I've got no reserves left to draw on"; stimulate with moxa
  • When someone can't see or take in the harvest they have, or has never had one, and is forever moaning they never get anywhere: "I work so hard and it's all for nothing"
Notes
  • Junction (Luo) point with the Spleen
  • Very good for Earth problems on the mental side
  • A plentiful energy supply; this reservoir is seldom empty, and it raises the general energy
  • Good to do after ST-37 and ST-39, once they have been filled
  • Harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach when the Spleen is full and the Stomach empty
  • Because it is a reservoir, its effect is almost that of a Source point

From Class

  • LU-10 Yuji: Bled for heat in the blood in anemia with inflammation markers; look for visible varicose/occluded vessels at luo points. (Yuen)
  • LI-11, SJ-5, ST-40 to clear heat: Clears heat in Yangming and Shaoyang via the primary channels. (Rabinowitz)
  • ST-23 Taiyi / ST-24 Huaroumen: ST-23/ST-24 quiet the shen (abdomen as 'second brain'); Taiyi is above Taiji; ST-40 clears rather than quiets; moxa calms, needling/bleeding clears. (Yuen)
  • ST-40 Fenglong: Bled at its luo point for heat in the blood (low RBC with raised inflammation markers) since heat is produced by the stomach. (Yuen)
  • ST-40 Fenglong: ST-40 clearing the shen is 'intellectual selection' (a learned action); palpation-based selection may actually reach luo or sinew layers, not primaries. (Yuen)
  • ST-40 Fenglong with SP-3: ST-40 transforms phlegm, clears worry-heat and calms Shen but drains a weak Spleen; pair with SP-3 Taibai or Ren-4/Ren-6/Ren-12. (Yuen)
  • ST-40, ST-45, HT-9 (agitation from heat): When heat agitates the Heart and stirs the Shen, ST-40, ST-45 and HT-9 reduce excitability and irritability. (Lewis)
  • SP-9 + SP-6 + SP-3 with moxa; add ying-spring if heat: Strengthen the Spleen with moxa on SP-9, SP-6, SP-3; with a wiry pulse at risk of heat, add ST-40 and a ying-spring point. (Yuen)
  • HT-5 Tongli (luo): Regulates heart qi, clears/calms shen by clearing heat (irritability, restlessness); goes to chest, tongue, eyes (loss of speech). (Gioioso)
  • SI-7, SJ-5, SJ-6, ST-40, Ren-15, BL-58, LI-6, GB-37, LV-5, Du-1 (luo complements): Luo complements: SI-7 endocarditis heat; SJ-6 toxic heat; SJ-5 wind-damp bi; BL-58 heart-attack prodrome; LI-6 edema; ST-40/Ren-15 phlegm; GB-37; LV-5, Du-1 rectification. (Gioioso)
  • KI-4 Dazhong: Bled at the luo point where veins are occluded near the inner ankle, for anemia with heat in the blood. (Yuen)
  • PC-3 Quze (water point) for fluid phlegm/edema: For fluid phlegm with edema, use PC-3 (water point) with Spleen points (SP-6, ST-40, SP-3, Ren-4) plus Ren-17 and digestive Pericardium points (PC-7, PC-6). (Yuen)
  • Clear the shen: ST-40, ST-45, HT-9: Heart and stomach are the most yang of their groups, so act most on the spirit. (Yuen)
  • Full-body protocol: ST-36 to ST-40/42, SP-6/7/8, LV-3, LI-4, ST-25, Ren-12, Ren-6, Ren-17: Earth School 'treat the center' approach; feel ST-36 qi descend to ST-40/42. (Alexander)
  • Wind strategies with Gallbladder/San Jiao points: Scatter wind: GB-14, GB-12, SJ-17, SJ-2; course wind: GB-20, GB-8, SJ-18, SJ-5, SJ-6; pacify wind: GB-13 with SJ-10; SJ-2, SJ-5 'bathe the nerves'. (Gioioso)
  • Essential-oil blend for phlegm misting the mind: Apply a blend to phlegm points (e.g. ST-40, SP-9, Ren points, scalp points) as adjunct or primary therapy for patients who won't take herbs. (Yuen)
  • Heat in the blood with anemia — bleed first: Low RBC plus raised sed rate, CO2 or total protein = heat in blood; treat by bleeding luo points to clear heat before it causes hemorrhage. (Yuen)
  • Placental issues & preeclampsia: Abruption: nourish yin/blood, subdue Liver wind (Gou Teng, Mai Men Dong); accreta = blood stasis; preeclampsia: refer for bloodwork, Du-16, GB-20, ST-40, BL-62, LI-11. (Lewis)
