Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Middle Capital is the Accumulation point of the Liver, where Qi and Blood gather the way people gather in a big city. It revitalizes the whole body; it lifts a person up and lets them look around. It is very powerful in body and in mind, fortifying and building, and it gives the person a clear statement of grounding. A busy center for Qi and Blood, it centers a person within their creativity, heightening and strengthening it so they can fill their space with it. It is a source of richness for Wood: a place of quality, wisdom, inspiration and joy without worry.

Worsley
  • Worsley calls it a Centre of Energy. He gives it as a First Aid point for urine retention, spasms and cramps.

Location: On the inner lower leg, behind the edge of the tibia, 8 ACI above the medial malleolus prominence.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 3 cones

When to Consider
  • When a person needs lifting up and a look around
  • When the mind and spirit of Wood have become rigid and hidebound and need a new outlook
  • When the person needs a clear statement of grounding
  • When Qi has become stagnant and the person needs revitalizing
  • When a person is not taking charge, not being the general of their own life
  • When there is too much activity and it needs calming
Notes
  • Accumulation (Xi-Cleft) point of the Liver
  • Fortifying and building

From Class

  • LV-6 Zhongdu: Xi-cleft; lower-abdominal masses or urinary pain. (Lewis)
  • Metropolis (du) points: SP-2, KI-19, LV-6: For those who feel unredeemable: SP-2 Dadu lifts yang from 'hell'; KI-19 Yindu regulates Chong and Ren; LV-6 Zhongdu analgesic, for heavy bleeding. (Yuen)
  • Xi-cleft points for acute pain at end of life: Start locally with ashi points, find the channel, then use its xi-cleft point for acute pain; non-acupuncturists can anoint these points with the essential oils. (Lewis)
