Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Di is Earth in the largest sense; Ji is a silk cocoon, almost invisible. As the Accumulation point, it is a center of energy point, a small invisible source generating movement: the power to move forward when things are sluggish and bogged down. If a farmer wasn't getting a harvest, he would turn the earth and till the soil, and doing this point is like tilling the soil. It shakes the Earth up, making it move and turning it over, and gets the vital Qi moving. Earth Motivator can also soothe an overworked Spleen and bring it back to equanimity. In some people the Earth has lain unturned for generations; packed hard, impacted and sodden, it is of no use until it is cultivated, which prepares it to receive. The message is: this is the Earth you have known until now, and now we will till it so you can plant new seeds. It is a bulldozer that thoroughly shakes the Earth up: picture a rusty bulldozer sitting in the corner, started up to turn the soil, loosen it and get it ready to receive. Once it is moving, the energy can be transferred and directed. With every Earth Causative Factor, ask whether treatment should start by getting the Earth moving.

Worsley

Location: On the inner lower leg, behind the edge of the tibia, 9 ACI above the medial malleolus prominence.
Needle depth: 4 fen
Moxa: 3-7 cones

When to Consider
  • When an Earth Causative Factor (CF) feels like they're struggling and struggling and can never quite get their harvest
  • When things are sluggish and bogged down in body, mind and spirit: a kick in the pants point
  • When the person has thought about it and now needs to move with it, or they'll be in the same place forever
  • When all the energy has dropped and needs to be reversed and gotten going again
  • When an Earth CF has a lot of troubles and is stuck and sluggish
  • When the Earth Officials won't respond and need to get really moving
  • When worry, obsessive and stuck thinking, or depression have tied up the Spleen
  • For stubborn, hard-headed people who do not hear a word you say
  • When Earth is hard, barren or over-cultivated
  • When the Spleen has become sluggish or hyper; it revitalizes or calms
  • When years of drugs have left a lot of toxins; it helps open up and cleanse
Notes
  • Accumulation (Xi Cleft) point of the Spleen
  • Use only on an Earth CF
  • It tills the soil; the next treatments would be adding the seeds
  • Like other Accumulation points, a 'periscope' point that helps a person look at things anew
  • Can change all twelve pulses
  • Often used early in treatment

From Class

  • SP-8 Diji: Xi-cleft point of the spleen ('axis of the earth'); paired with KI-2 to balance hormones. (Yuen)
  • SP-8 Diji: Xi-cleft; uterine and lower-abdominal masses or pain (e.g., ovarian cancer). Also 'Earth's Pivot' in the renewal axis. (Lewis)
  • KI-2 & SP-8 (classical) vs SP-6 & SP-9 (TCM): For Kidneys to support the Spleen, TCM uses SP-6 and disperses fluid with SP-9; the classical choice is KI-2 and SP-8. (Yuen)
  • KI-2 + SP-8, SP-4 + LV-8, LV-2 + HT-5: Distal points to reset blood: KI-2/SP-8 (hormonal), SP-4/LV-8 (spleen-liver banking blood), LV-2 Xingjian supports HT-5 Tongli (heart circulation). (Yuen)
  • KI-2 Rangu: Fire point of the kidney ('Blazing Valley'); with SP-8 helps regulate the tian gui / hormonal system. (Yuen)
  • 1st lunar month: PC-6, Ren-12, BL-20, KI-2 + SP-8: Month 1: PC-6; Ren-12, BL-20 support Earth; KI-2 fire 'chisels the embryo' into SP-8; avoid needling the Liver channel this month. (Lewis)
  • 2nd month: HT-6, Ren-15 (Gao), Ren-6 (Huang), BL-43, SP-8: Month 2: HT-6; Ren-15 (Gao), Ren-6 (Huang), BL-43 releases scapular heat, SP-8 governs the Bao; herbs Huang Lian, Qian Shi, Tu Si Zi, Xu Duan. (Lewis)
  • Renewal axis (after sudden/traumatic departure): Asks the soul 'returning or going on?': ST-25 centers the heaven-earth axis, SP-8 reconnects with earth, SP-21 gathers the person, then Du-26 calls consciousness back. (Lewis)
  • Xi-cleft points for acute pain at end of life: Start locally with ashi points, find the channel, then use its xi-cleft point for acute pain; non-acupuncturists can anoint these points with the essential oils. (Lewis)
