Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Extremity of Yin is the final point on the longest meridian; from here you move to the Yin of KI-1 Bubbling Spring. You go down to the Extremity of Yin before you come up to the Bubbling Spring. It keeps the cycle turning: the end comes ahead of the beginning, a return to what is new. As the Metal point and Tonification point, it brings purity and sparkling clarity to Water, helping a person keep what is of value and let go of the rest.

Worsley

Carries us safely to the furthest extreme of ourselves, where real growth, expansion and transformation take place. Living vibrantly means never arriving at a fixed destination: we travel as far as we can into one extreme and then simply cycle on into another phase, expression and possibility.

Location: At the nail point on the outer (lateral) side of the little toe.
Needle depth: 2 fen
Moxa: 3 cones

When to Consider
  • When a person has reached the limit of what they can endure
  • When a person is afraid to let go of the unknown and holds back, fearing that otherwise nothing would be left
  • When Water is sluggish, has lost its purpose and momentum, and the person needs a kick
  • When the outlook is tarnished and uninspired
  • When natural rhythms have been lost
  • When the person is ready to throw in the towel: the head grows heavy and droops
Notes
  • Metal point, Tonification point and Exit point, Well point
  • Gives a kick; a general stimulant
  • A very painful point
  • Well known for turning breech babies
  • Connects the child to its mother. If Metal, the mother, lacks stability, there will always be some chaos in the Water; at this Tonification point the Water element is energized, shown the stability of knowing itself, and linked with Metal's clarity

From Class

  • BL-67 Zhiyin: Jing-well used as a release point, like a sinew treatment, to drain the ashi. (Yuen)
  • Breech: moxa BL-67 (32–36 weeks); Ren-8 salt moxa: BL-67 moxa just agitates the fetus to move — not if the head is engaged; moxa Ren-8 (salt moxa if possible) to pivot downward. (Lewis)
  • Jing-well indications (overview): Jing-wells open the portals and resuscitate yang: PC-9, SI-1, HT-9 for behavior change; LU-11, LI-1 throat; SP-1 stops bleeding; HT-9 tongue pain, heart attack. (Gioioso)
  • Jing-well sequence in labor: BL-67 → LI-1 → ST-45 …: Only once contractions span the whole Dai: start with water (BL-67), end with wood; LI-1 opens the birth canal; ST-45 after the cervix opens. (Lewis)
