Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Ran means to light a fire and Gu means valley. This is the place where Water and Fire mix, an alchemical sense of animation; it is dynamic as Fire and Water mix, and great for warming or cooling the meridians. It is great for warming frozen Water, but take care not to overheat. Its other name, Dragon in the Abyss, reminds us that this is the Water channel's Fire point: the Dragon represents the point's fiery nature, and the Abyss the Kidneys, Water's deep source. It is also seen as Water reflecting the light. Here the spring water is warmed, so it comes to us at exactly the right temperature; it brings in joy and washes troubles away. In Daoism, Water is revered as the model of the spiritual way: it is the first element of the cycle and the source of every later possibility, the water of life, the fountain of youth, the primordial sea. We spend our first nine months living in water, and through Water we receive our inheritance and our physical form. Fire and Water depend on each other, with Fire in the Water and Water in the Fire, and their relationship matters greatly for every physical and spiritual transformation. The will of Water is to keep changing and flowing, gentle yet profound. When Water, the beginning of the whole cycle, is out of balance, we lack the energy and determination to become what we came here to be.

Worsley

Activates the expansion of our consciousness.

  • Worsley gives it as a First Aid point for urine retention, injury to testicles and cystitis.
  • Not to be needled from the 8th month of pregnancy onward

Location: On the inner (medial) side of the foot, below the navicular tuberosity.
Needle depth: 5 fen
Moxa: 3-5 cones

When to Consider
  • When the Water is frozen and needs warming
  • When Water without Fire has become dark, cold and inert, and the person is withdrawn, always tired and tearful
  • When someone has lost interest in intimacy and social situations
  • When a person drives on relentlessly and has forgotten how to relax and include others
  • When the Kidneys need cooling down, for example at menopause
  • When there is anxiety, mental restlessness and excess talking
  • When the person cannot move or even take one step; warmth will carry and sustain their movement
  • When a person is contracted, still, held back, overly serious or flat
  • To rekindle sexual desire, especially when the person no longer cares that it has gone
  • When the spirit is frozen and cold, hostile, fearful, anxious or nervous
Combinations
  • KI-1 Bubbling Spring followed by KI-2: warms the icy spring water
Notes
  • Fire point and Spring point of the Kidney
  • If the body is hot and feverish, sedate
  • It cuts through the cold to reach the heat, like light striking water and making it shine

From Class

  • SP-8 Diji: Xi-cleft point of the spleen ('axis of the earth'); paired with KI-2 to balance hormones. (Yuen)
  • KI-2 & SP-8 (classical) vs SP-6 & SP-9 (TCM): For Kidneys to support the Spleen, TCM uses SP-6 and disperses fluid with SP-9; the classical choice is KI-2 and SP-8. (Yuen)
  • KI-2 + SP-8, SP-4 + LV-8, LV-2 + HT-5: Distal points to reset blood: KI-2/SP-8 (hormonal), SP-4/LV-8 (spleen-liver banking blood), LV-2 Xingjian supports HT-5 Tongli (heart circulation). (Yuen)
  • KI-2 Rangu: Fire point of the kidney ('Blazing Valley'); with SP-8 helps regulate the tian gui / hormonal system. (Yuen)
  • KI-2 Rangu (Blazing Valley): The impulse to move outward into life; awakens warm vitality within the deep reservoir of water. (Lewis)
  • LV-13 Zhangmen added to Dai Mai (Li Shizhen): Li Shizhen added LV-13 to the Dai Mai (originally GB-26–28) and KI-2 Rangu to the Yin Qiao; you can add to channels yourself from realization. (Yuen)
  • 1st lunar month: PC-6, Ren-12, BL-20, KI-2 + SP-8: Month 1: PC-6; Ren-12, BL-20 support Earth; KI-2 fire 'chisels the embryo' into SP-8; avoid needling the Liver channel this month. (Lewis)
  • Reverse five-element release sequence: Release the elements in reverse: Metal LU-11, Fire HT-9 (or PC-9), Water KI-2, Earth SP-21, Wood LV-14. (Lewis)
