Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

The Earth point, a point of great stability: without earth there would be no tree. Very powerful, though less so on a spirit level. As the Earth point it strengthens, steadies and harmonizes the Gallbladder, and it is a great strengthening point when the Gallbladder is weak. It grounds the decision maker and helps a person get above the complaint and find new ways. When Wood grows without enough soil, smothered and unable to breathe, this point adds Earth and helps stability: picture a tree in too little soil, which the first strong wind blows over. As a spring it lets Wood stay fluid and flexible, rooting down for nourishment and taking in essence; that smoothness calms frustration and eases rigid decisions.

Worsley
  • Not to be needled from the 2nd month of pregnancy onward

Location: On the outer lower leg, 14 ACI above the lateral malleolus prominence, in front of and slightly below the fibular head.
Needle depth: 6 fen
Moxa: 7-10 cones

When to Consider
  • When there is timidity, shyness and indecision
  • When a person is constantly wary and anxious about people and places, or disoriented
  • When there is depression, frustration, irritation, anger, confusion or emotional extremes
  • When someone is too tightly wound inside
  • When resentment and complaint have festered long enough: it gives a new birth out of them
  • When a person cannot hear that the situation could be seen differently; it broadens perspectives and plants new seeds
  • When every decision seems to lead nowhere and everything looks awful; it brings hope for the future, dispels negativity and smooths things out
  • For people plagued by self-doubt and indecision, easily frightened and startled
Notes
  • Earth point and Sea point of the Gallbladder; Influential (gathering) point of the tendons
  • Wood Causative Factors (CFs) often sprain their ankles
  • Moxa here helps anchor the patient to the earth. In many ways it resembles ST-36, but on the Wood element

From Class

  • GB-44 / GB-30 / GB-34 / GB-39 / BL-11: GB-44 not added without hip treatment; for the hip use GB-30, GB-34 (sinews), GB-39 (bone), BL-11 — then GB-44 might be added. (Yuen)
  • Month 6: moxa GB-34; Xu Duan; Spleen points SP-4, 8, 12, 17, 18: Bind things (Shan Yao), nourish Stomach/Lung yin for Wei qi; Liver blood for the sinews; Spleen points rectify qi. (Lewis)
  • Nine Peaks treatment: Builds on the Seven Heavenly Star Prayer: add GB-30 and GB-34 to strengthen yang, or LU-7 and HT-5 to nourish yin and soften the heart; ends at Du-20. (Lewis)
