Contraindications

Notes

  • This point deeply revives the Fire of Life.
  • It is the best point for the quality/quantity of Blood.
  • For extreme anemia, use fifty to one hundred moxa cones.
  • It treats Blood afflictions of speech and stuttering where the Fire needs great replenishment at a deep level.
  • The name refers to this points relationship to the innermost part of the body, thought to fatty tissue between the Heart and diaphragm. Diseases which settle in this area are thought to be beyond cure. This point effectively treats chronic conditions which do not respond to conventional treatment.
  • Taosists believe that proper use of this point produces immortality.
  • This point is used when the patient cannot remain sitting, cannot take her knees in her arms or cannot bend the vertebral column.
  • To tonify the Qi of the whole body in a very debilitated person, use moxibustion.
  • If the patient has Phlegm Accumulation, when the point is stimulated,he or she will feel energy like a torrent of water.
  • Many classical texts forbid needling this point and recommend only moxibustion. 100 to 500 moxa cones are recommended. If the patient is too fatigued to remain sitting up for the treatment, he may lie on his side. REN-3 Zhongji, REN-4 Guanyuan and REN-6 Qihai may be combined with this treatment.
  • In case of Excess Heat, moxa ST-36 Zusanli, to bring the Heat down to the lower part of the body
  • Texts also recommend that after moxibustion on this point, moxa should also be applied to REN-6 Qihai and REN-4 Guanyuan in order to conduct the Heat downward.
  • This is a good emotional control point.
  • The name of this point is said to relate to the fatty tissue between the Heart and the diaphragm.
  • This is an excellent point for chronic disease.
  • It is used for difficult cases.
  • For a patient under 20 years old, do not moxa, it can cause an accumulation of Heat in the Upper Jiao..

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

No Bladder line point has wider general use than Rich for the Vitals. It sends a fresh surge of clear, vital energy through body, mind and spirit, acting directly on how good the patient's Qi is and truly enriching the vitality of all three. It cleanses the blood and goes out to every cell in the body, our life blood, for the person whose spirit needs to be warmed and enriched. Like a battery recharge, it provides inner filling, helps a person fill their own space and restores Fire deep down. It reaches the vitals, physical and mental, more than the spirit, and brings joy and happiness (Secondary source).

Worsley

Brings warmth and revitalization to each cell of our being and deepens our experience of love for ourselves and others.

Location: On the back, 4 ACI from the midline, level with the dip between the T4 and T5 spinous processes.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 7-50 cones

When to Consider
  • When the patient is very cold, lacking warmth physically, mentally or spiritually
  • For depression, negativity, or sexual unhappiness or inhibition
  • For someone who is so depleted, with no vitality in their Fire
  • When a person is fragile and needs building up
  • When there have been chronic relationship losses and the Heart Protector has been hit hard and can't quite recover its own inner strength
  • When weak blood shows as weakness, frigidity and difficulty being with others, which can look like fear
  • For emotional frigidity, overall fatigue and weariness
  • When the patient is washed out or burnt out
Combinations
  • REN-8 Spirit Deficiency with UB-43: great after an intensive
Notes
  • Outer Bladder line point with a special relationship to a Fire Causative Factor (CF)
  • Sometimes called the chronic illness point
  • Moxa is key: start with 7 moxa per side and increase, using the point every second treatment
  • Can be repeated over and over again
  • Linked with the body's innermost region, believed to be the fat lying between heart and diaphragm; the ancients held that illness lodged here was almost beyond cure, and the Taoists claimed proper use of this point brought immortality, an overstatement of its preventive value
  • Raises energy in all the Officials on every level when someone is completely drained in body, mind or spirit
  • Can take more moxa than any other point (from 7 up to as many as 50), and can be repeated as often as six times in twelve treatments for ongoing enrichment
  • In illness that badly depletes the immune system it builds the person up and is essential
