Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Utmost Middle is the classic reunion point, the utmost center of body, mind and spirit, where the Conception Vessel meets the Kidney, Spleen and Liver. The name Central Pole comes from the pole star around which the others revolve. It is a grounding point that draws things down into the lower body and helps when the patient is shaky. All the leg meridians touch here, so it affects a person's contact with their own power, helping them hold fast to their energy instead of letting it dribble away. To find our way we need to fix our position against points that endure for as long as we live, like the North Star or the sun; this point is such a central axis, steadying and supporting a person in times of great need. It is the root and middle of the lowest energy center, a point for drawing on the lower Dan Tian's deep reserves.

Worsley
  • Worsley calls it a Centre of Energy. He gives it as a First Aid point for urine retention.

Location: On the front midline, 4 ACI below the umbilicus.
Needle depth: 8 fen
Moxa: 5-15 cones

When to Consider
  • When the patient is shaky and needs grounding
  • When people don't reach maturity; they may look younger or childlike, and they're immature
  • When someone is hanging on to things for dear life, going on and on
  • When a delicate or poorly nourished mind and spirit need yin strength and calm
  • For weariness, fatigue and weakness of body, mind and spirit; it warms and brings and a return of joy
  • For a Water CF who drains their power through involvement in too many things
  • For a flighty person who needs to be contained in themselves and come back to sit in their own seat
  • For final balance and revitalization, once some balance has been established
Combinations
  • REN-4 First Gate with REN-3: goes to the place of essence, who they are, how they see life and trauma, where they can't live life and where they should go from here; gives the power in life
Notes
  • Alarm (Front Mu) point of the Bladder; reunion point of the Conception Vessel with the Kidney, Spleen and Liver
  • Avoid with a major imbalance, with some pulses up and others down
  • Talking to people one by one to get something done works less well than bringing them all together to tackle the problem; so here every meridian that meets can be treated at once
  • All the Conception Vessel meeting points work at a deep level and work best once some balance exists; in chaos, SP-6 may serve better

From Class

  • Ren-3 and Ren-4 to consolidate Jing: 'Gu' (consolidate Jing — ancient inside a box): use Ren points the divergent trajectory passes through, e.g., Ren-3 and Ren-4. (Yuen)
  • Pre-Ge Hong revival points: Du-20, Du-15, Ren-12, Ren-3, LI-19: For death-like inversion: Du-20 and Du-15 (scalp yang), Ren-12 and Ren-3 (yin), plus LI-19 to start breathing again. (Yuen)
