Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Merchant Mound is the Metal point on the Spleen. Shang is the musical note associated with Metal; it also means to be able to negotiate or trade, to be able to speak from the interior and to give voice to what is going on. Qiu is a hill, a raised place in the Earth where the ore that becomes Metal is dug out. The point brings the ability to negotiate through the morass of problems. Metal, the child of Earth, can also lift Earth out of self-absorption and remind it of the bigger picture, bringing inspiration, letting go and a clear sense of boundaries. With the spirit of this point, you know when it is the right one. It honors and respects woundedness and acknowledges the hurt. Metal gives Earth value, structure, order and rhythm, a richness like trace minerals in the soil; it is a place where rhythms and cycles meet. A merchant understands what things are worth and supplies goods; a mound is a place of exchange. It is another point about richness.

Worsley

Location: In the hollow in front of the medial malleolus, behind the tibialis anterior tendon.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 3-7 cones

When to Consider
  • When Earth needs replenishing after what life has brought
  • When the person has to negotiate through life's occurrences and the world is overwhelming them
  • When people are totally spent and wiped out
  • When Earth is wrapped up in mundane things and has forgotten the bigger picture of life
  • When thoughts are rambling and unfocused, or there are big mood swings and the person feels very needy and unstructured
  • When there is extreme agitation (sedate)
  • When a person is overly self-involved, placing too much value on themselves
  • When the thinking mind works too hard at digesting experience
Combinations
  • ST-45 Hard Bargain with SP-5: often used together for the place where people are totally spent and wiped out
Notes
  • Metal point and Sedation point of the Spleen
  • A very cleansing point; known as the Calm Sleep point
  • Sedate when agitation is extreme
  • Can be used in its own right when the Spleen is depleted
