Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Great Horizontal epitomizes the quality of the Earth element: ground that is stable and always there. It brings stability, support and evenness to the emotions and the energy, and brings steadiness. It is for patients experiencing earthquakes in mind and spirit. Think also of the middle Jiao, the person who can't take any more. It brings steadfastness and security, calmness and peacefulness: let the world do its thing. Like a frantic child calmed by lying in the grass, it puts a person in contact with the earth, bringing steadiness, firmness, balance and leveling, and lays everything out calm and flat so they can go on processing their experience.

Worsley
  • Worsley mentions Great Horizontal as one of the Spleen points that bring out the balance and equilibrium belonging to the Earth Element.

Location: On the abdomen, 4 ACI from the midline, level with both the umbilicus centre and REN-8.
Needle depth: 10 fen
Moxa: 5-10 cones

When to Consider
  • When the patient is experiencing earthquakes in mind and spirit
  • When the person is shattered, crazy and uncentered
  • When someone can't take any more and cannot process what is happening in their life
  • When the emotions and the energy need stability, support and evenness
  • When there is anxiety and agitation, or sighing and melancholy
  • For someone who is always sad
  • To calm a person after an earth-shattering experience; it moves and lifts the Qi
Combinations
  • ST-25 Heavenly Pivot with SP-15: to calm; the points surround the umbilicus. Used a lot for an Earth Causative Factor (CF), and good when there are many symptoms of Earth-type depression, used with command points
