Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Tai means bigger than large, and Bai means white. Venus, the planet, is called Tai Bai in Chinese; Venus is in the western sky, and the west is Metal and the color white. This goes to the spirit of the meaning of the words of the point: it fortifies the Earth, which then goes on to fortify the Metal. Being both the Source point and the Earth point of the Earth meridian, it connects a person with their Original Qi, settling and steadying them, and it is great for the person who carries the virtues, helping them find a grounded sense of security in themselves. It nourishes, holds and lifts. Whiteness means purity and essence, bringing quality. As Earth within Earth it gives centeredness, grounding, roots, stability, quality and richness.

Worsley

Location: On the inner edge of the foot, immediately proximal to the 1st metatarsal head.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 3-5 cones

When to Consider
  • When an Earth Causative Factor (CF) gets very heavy and bogged down and can't transform themselves or anything in their lives
  • When there is brooding, feeling trapped and feeling sorry for oneself: the Earth trap
  • When the person needs a grounded sense of security in themselves
  • When worry and too much thinking have worn the person out, and memory and thinking feel foggy
  • When there is congestion within the Earth itself
  • When someone is caught up in always being busy and cannot make smooth transitions
  • For someone ungrounded by air travel or frequent moves
  • When a person is sinking and needs support and understanding
  • For concentration, memorization and study
  • When there is a sense of impoverishment and whining, and nothing seems to satisfy or fill the person up
Notes
  • Earth point, Source point and Horary point of the Spleen
  • Horary point: most powerful at its Horary time, 9 to 11 am, and in Late Summer, the Earth season
  • As the Horary point it shakes up the Earth, removes debris and frees congestion; also used to reinforce other points
  • If the Horary point doesn't do it, SP-8 can shake the Earth up

From Class

  • LU-7 Lieque: Lung 7 more effective than LU-9 for weak hemoglobin; with KI-3 and SP-3 for the organs involved. (Yuen)
  • ST-40 Fenglong with SP-3: ST-40 transforms phlegm, clears worry-heat and calms Shen but drains a weak Spleen; pair with SP-3 Taibai or Ren-4/Ren-6/Ren-12. (Yuen)
  • SP-9 + SP-6 + SP-3 with moxa; add ying-spring if heat: Strengthen the Spleen with moxa on SP-9, SP-6, SP-3; with a wiry pulse at risk of heat, add ST-40 and a ying-spring point. (Yuen)
  • PC-3 Quze (water point) for fluid phlegm/edema: For fluid phlegm with edema, use PC-3 (water point) with Spleen points (SP-6, ST-40, SP-3, Ren-4) plus Ren-17 and digestive Pericardium points (PC-7, PC-6). (Yuen)
  • Edema of pregnancy (Zi Zhong): SJ-6, BL-20, Ren-9, Ren-11, Ren-12, ST-36, SP-3, KI-7, ST-21, BL-22: Yi Zhi Ren with Shen Ling Bai Zhu San for weak Spleen; Li Yu Tang (carp, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Dang Gui, Bai Shao, Sheng Jiang). (Lewis)
  • Tarragon: Oil that resonates with SP-3 Taibai; apply a drop on the point. (Yuen)
