Contraindications

Notes

  • The most important function of this point is that it nourishes Kidney Jing and marrow.
  • It is an important point to remove obstruction from the Shao Yang channels in lateral side of the neck.
  • The regular use of this point in the elderly prevents Wind-Stoke.
  • This point summons Qi to the feet and lower limbs for conditions such as paralysis. It is said to only work occasionally. Make sure that the connection channels are of the same pulse quality/ quantity.
  • This point has an ability to affect hearing.
  • This point is related to erythropoesis and leukopoiesis.
  • Sources differ on the border (Deadman posterior, Maciocia anterior); the posterior location is used for needling and the anterior for moxa.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Good for drawing energy down. Here the three lower Yang meridians, Bladder, Gallbladder and Stomach, come together and meet. It is for flexibility of Wood on every level: a cup should hang and swing freely. It helps a person make a wise decision and then move, checking whether things are going according to plan.

Worsley

Location: On the outer lower leg, 3 ACI above the lateral malleolus prominence; lying face up with the knee half bent, it is found in front of the fibula's edge.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 5-15 cones

When to Consider
  • When feelings are stuck, with frustration, no growth or vision, much sighing and a heavy chest
  • When energy needs drawing down from the upper body
  • When someone is stubborn, entrenched and fixed, frustrated and feeling unlovable
  • When the person has lost the ability to listen fairly and look at every point of view, asking whether something serves the highest good or only the ego
  • When the person is acting against their own nature
Notes
  • Reunion point of the three leg Yang meridians
  • Use this point a lot
  • In old China children often wore bells on their feet at the level of this point

From Class

  • SP-6 + GB-39 (symmetrical points) for anemia: SP-6 tonifies yin and is symmetrical with GB-39 (influential point of marrow); needle both at the water level with Jueyin energy to open the marrow. (Hiltbrand)
  • GB-39 Xuanzhong + Baliao + Huatuojiaji: Guide acquired essence to the brain: GB-39 (influential point of marrow), the baliao (BL-31–34), up the Huatuojiaji to scalp points. (Shea)
  • GB-44 / GB-30 / GB-34 / GB-39 / BL-11: GB-44 not added without hip treatment; for the hip use GB-30, GB-34 (sinews), GB-39 (bone), BL-11 — then GB-44 might be added. (Yuen)
  • Li Shizhen's Yang Wei trajectory as five-element genetic modulation: Li Shizhen built Yang Wei from BL-63, GB-35, GB-39, SJ-13, SJ-15, SI-10, LI-14 and GB-21, looping to GB-13 Benshen to change the marrow/brain. (Yuen)
