Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Zhao is fire in something and Hai is sea. Translated as Shining Sea or Illuminated Sea: in still water, the light illuminates the inside. It is very still, and you find that light in the stillness. The Sea is where rivulets come together; all rivers feed into the Sea, where all the water is found, the huge container. It holds huge volumes of energy and fluid: a clear, bright, light sea, filled with illumination and clarity. This sea ought to be controlled and tranquil. It puts a person in touch with the greater universe and the light within. When it is full, body, mind and spirit can draw on it for lubrication, fluidity and inner quality.

Worsley

Shows us a clear reflection of the way we live and gives a penetrating look at ourselves. Our willingness to look honestly at what is revealed frees us from misconceptions, offering a view of the truth and the realization of our true self.

  • Worsley gives it as a First Aid point for snake bites, insensibility, haemorrhage, concussion, bee stings and apoplexy.

Location: On the inner ankle, 4 fen below the lower border of the medial malleolus, following the central line of the tibial shaft downward.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 3-5 cones

When to Consider
  • For someone (a Water Causative Factor (CF)) who is unable to find that stillness, or who is agitated; it brings the light to it
  • To calm the spirit when the sea rages and floods, bringing fear and panic
  • To turn on the lights and help the person receive clarity about where they want to go in life
  • When fears and fright need soothing so the person can look at things more calmly
Notes
  • Opening point for the Yin Qiao Mai
  • Out of control, this sea is every bit as dangerous as Fire
  • The name speaks of a reserve or sea of energy and of the point's effect on the Sea of Qi in the abdomen; 'Illuminated' hints at the clear, bright quality of the Qi where the Yin Qiao Mai begins
  • It lies beside Blazing Valley, the Fire point, and takes its name from the brightness of that fire shining on the water

From Class

  • KI-3 & KI-6: KI-3 for strong familial/inherited patterns (thyroid, asthma); KI-6 to clear some overall heat. (Fuggman)
  • KI-6 & BL-62 for red, painful eyes (Su Wen ch.23/63): Red, painful eyes: Su Wen 23 uses KI-6 (Yin Qiao), Su Wen 63 BL-62 (Yang Qiao), on the side opposite the more affected eye. (Rabinowitz)
  • KI-6 Zhaohai: Illuminating Sea; point on the Yin Qiao trajectory (its so-called opening point). (Yuen)
  • KI-6 Zhaohai (Shining Sea): Journey inward into the deep yin reservoir of Yin Qiao; Shen's light reflects on the unconscious so we see honestly beneath the constructed personality. (Lewis)
  • Origin of opening points (Neo-Confucian 'destiny in our own hands'): Neo-Confucian belief that destiny is in our hands made the eight extras channels to tap destiny; many opening points are luo points, finalized by Yang Jizhou. (Yuen)
  • Qiao couple-pairing & the Dai: You needn't always use couple pairs; to break stagnation first reduce overload, e.g., GB-41 opens the Dai to drain Yin Qiao (KI-6) or Yang Qiao (BL-62). (Yuen)
  • Yin Qiao / Yang Qiao as luo of Ren / Du: Yin Qiao is the luo of Ren and Yang Qiao of Du; their 'opening points' KI-6 Zhaohai and BL-62 Shenmai are really points on the trajectories. (Yuen)
