Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Long Strength, also known as Stairway to Heaven, is just above the coccyx at the start of the Governor Vessel, which moves us forward into life. It is step one in the journey, a way of sending Heavenly energy out to every Official, and it gives the whole spinal column strength and vitality. It has to do with the backbone, physically and in life, if people step on them. It gives someone direction and strength, resurrects the spirit and greatly strengthens body, mind and spirit. It connects a person at the deepest level with their own root of power in the cosmos, which is strength, survival, passion and sexuality, giving the spine strength to stand straight in the world. It gives the power to see things through, to stay steady when facing adversity and injustice, to hold one's own against another's opinion, and to see difficulty as a teacher and look beyond it. It gives uprightness, endurance and long-haul stability; a powerful reinforcer and a kick in the pants, bringing energy in from the heavens to resurrect the Officials.

Worsley
  • Worsley gives it as the Entry point of the Governor Vessel.

Location: On the back midline, at the coccyx tip.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: 5-15 cones

When to Consider
  • When people step on them and they need backbone in life
  • When the person is completely distraught and feels about to blow their top
  • When there is instability, a lack of coordination or a lack of cooperation
  • When someone needs direction and strength to move forward into life
  • When a person feels defeated or withdrawn and is easily laid low by others or by the world
  • When there is emotional instability, agitation or mania
  • When the upward, vital, surging energy is absent and there is chronic weakness
  • After a long illness, or when the patient has been flattened
  • When someone is hysterical; trouble at one end can be treated at the other, and this point pulls energy down from the head
  • When the person is hitting out (sedate), or withdrawn and cutting themselves off from everything (tonify)
Combinations
  • REN-1 Meeting of Yin with DU-1: the connection of extreme yin and extreme yang
  • DU-20 One Hundred Meetings with DU-1: for chronic weakness, raising the Qi above the abyss so new vision becomes possible
Notes
  • Junction point of the Governor Vessel with the Conception Vessel
  • A very powerful point for reinforcing the total energy; great with moxa
  • Similar to Body Pillar: each brings the spirit resolution

From Class

  • SI-7, SJ-5, SJ-6, ST-40, Ren-15, BL-58, LI-6, GB-37, LV-5, Du-1 (luo complements): Luo complements: SI-7 endocarditis heat; SJ-6 toxic heat; SJ-5 wind-damp bi; BL-58 heart-attack prodrome; LI-6 edema; ST-40/Ren-15 phlegm; GB-37; LV-5, Du-1 rectification. (Gioioso)
  • Exit points of the spirits: Du-20, Du-1, Jingming: Shen leaves through Du-20, po through the anus (Du-1, once Po Men), hun through the eyes (BL-1) or mouth — areas to anoint before burial. (Yuen)
  • Month 7: BL-40, BL-57, ST-36, KI-3, Du-1; Gui Pi Tang: Tonify qi and blood, lift the Spleen, strengthen capillaries. (Lewis)
  • Bladder–Kidney divergent (1st confluence) & Dai Mai: Kidney divergent from KI-10 to BL-40, up to BL-23, wraps into the Dai Mai connecting Ren, Du and Kidney; frequent UTIs or hemorrhoids may be displaced latency. (Yuen)
  • Ren Mai & Du Mai as final reservoirs of the luo system: Du-1 and Ren-15 (luo points of Du and Ren) mirror Batson's venous plexus; Ren and Du hold our deepest karmic patterns underlying chronic illness. (Lewis)
  • Jade (Yu) in burial: Stone of completion/eternity: noble burials placed jade in the mouth, rectum, and on Baihui or Yintang under a cap — the three openings where the spirit escapes. (Yuen)
  • Anointing the Seven Stars of the Great Dipper: Anoint seven levels of the central axis from Ren-1/Du-1 up to Du-20 so the spirits ascend through the crown; front Ren points can substitute for back Du points. (Lewis)
  • Lower dantian 'inner lift' breathing (Ming Men practice): Inhale while subtly lifting the pelvic floor and drawing in the lower abdomen so the 'waters of life' rise to nourish Ming Men fire; exhale softening without collapsing. (Lewis)
