DU-15 Yamen - Gate of Dumbness

More Spirit Names: Mute's Gate, Tongue Root, Gate to Dumbness

English: Gate of Muteness
Also Known As: Door of Muteness
Gate to Dumbness
Mute Door

Location

  • On the midline at the nape of the neck, in the depression 0.5 cun inferior to DU-16 Fengfu, below the spinous process of the first cervical vertebra (impalpable).
Note: The posterior hairline is measured as one cun inferior to DU-16 Fengfu. Locate DU-15 Yamen at the midpoint, i.e. 0.r cun above the posterior hairline.
  • Between the spinous processes of of the first and second cervical vertebrae, in the depression 0.5 cun within the hairline at the midpoint of the nape and 0.5 cun below DU-16 Fengfu.

Needling

  • Perpendicular insertion slightly inferiorly, 0.5 to 1 cun.
  • Traditionally moxibustion is not applicable.
  • Caution: the spinal canal lies between 1.5 to 2 cun deep to the skin surface, varying according to body build. Deep perpendicular insertion is strictly contraindicated, as is oblique insertion towards the brain.
  • Straight insertion one to two cun. The needle should be inserted level with the mouth or earlobe, and should not be rotated or otherwise agitated after insertion.
Sensation: local distention. When the needle is inserted too deeply, there will be a strong electric sensation indicating that the spinal cord has been touched. In this case, the needle should be at least partially withdrawn.
  • Caution: extreme care must be exercised so as to avoid inserting the needle upward into the medulla oblongata, where it could cause death.
  • Puncture perpendicularly 0.5 to 0.8 cun.

Five Elements Spirit Perspective

Spirit of the Point

Gate of Dumbness is for problems of speech and voice. It links to the tongue's root, which belongs to the Heart, and it can help when distress in the Heart leaves a person unable to speak. It encourages clear communication of the mind and spirit.

Worsley
  • Worsley counts it among the points of the Sea of Bone Marrow.

Location: On the back midline, in the dip between the C1 and C2 spinous processes.
Needle depth: 3 fen
Moxa: No moxa

When to Consider
  • When a person cannot speak because their Heart is in distress
  • When there is anxiety, mania or hysteria from a disturbance of the Heart
  • When there is a lack of mental clarity
  • When there is anger and irritability, or speech problems such as stage fright
Notes
  • Shallow needling and no moxa

From Class

  • Ren-22, Ren-23, Du-15 (Window of Sky points): Open communication between heaven and earth; located between heart and brain so what is truly in the heart can come out past our adornments. (Lewis)
  • Ren-22, Ren-23, Du-15 (unspoken words): Ren-22 and Ren-23 release tension at the tongue base; Du-15 Mute Gate helps express what remained unspoken and find closure. (Lewis)
  • Du-15 Yamen: Clears hidden heat affecting the shen. (Yuen)
  • Du-15 Yamen ('mute gate'): Asks what remains unsaid — last rites of rectification; opens the portals/orifices. (Yuen)
  • Du-20 Baihui vs Du-16 Fengfu: Ling Shu 33: sea of marrow — Du-20 brings yang up (prolapse, memory, resuscitation); Du-16 brings yang down (wind, BP, seizures, nosebleeds). (Yuen)
  • Orifice-opening alternatives: LI-1, SI-1, PC-9: Besides Du-15, LI-1, SI-1 and PC-9 open the orifices; the strategy matters more than the specific point. (Yuen)
  • Pre-Ge Hong revival points: Du-20, Du-15, Ren-12, Ren-3, LI-19: For death-like inversion: Du-20 and Du-15 (scalp yang), Ren-12 and Ren-3 (yin), plus LI-19 to start breathing again. (Yuen)
  • Nine Needles to Return Yang — as death medicine: Three stages: Separation (Du-15, PC-8, PC-6, SP-6); Transition (KI-1, KI-3, Ren-12); Deliverance (GB-30, ST-36 or ST-37, LI-4), giving yang momentum for passage. (Lewis)
